Q.No Marks
1. a) Explain the classification of underground coal mining methods with 5
reference to the thickness and inclination of the coal seams.
b) Explain the cycle of operations in a bord and pillar development 10
panel with Side Discharge Loaders and mine cars as coal evacuation
system in a 3 m thick coal seam at 250 m depth cover. Give the
layout of workings and manpower required to produce 600 tons of
coal per day from the development panel. Assume other conditions.

2. Write detailed notes on the following:

a) Geological features and coal measuring rocks of major 5
coalfields in India
b) Factors affecting size of the depillaring panel in underground 5
coal mine
c) Choice of mine size for extraction of coal by underground 5
methods of mining

3. Describe the sequence of extraction and design of the panel to produce 1000 15
tons of coal per day from depillaring panel with LHD’s with pillar size of 40
m at 200 m depth cover. Estimate the Output per Man Shift (OMS) from the
district with suitable mechanization for transport of coal upto the surface
through inclines. Assume other conditions.

4 a) Discuss the various methods of partial extraction of pillars for 5

protection of surface features in coal mines.
b) Give the layout of workings along with transportation, ventilation 10
arrangements, production and productivity in extraction of pillars
using modern continuous miners for cutting of coal at face and
shuttle car combination. Panel size is 300 m X 200 m with pillar,
split, and rib size of 50 m, 4.8 m and 3 m, respectively. Assume
other conditions.

5. a) Enumerate the problems of extraction of long standing pillars in 5

underground coal mines.
b) Describe various methods of extraction of pillars in coal mines by 10
caving system of goaf control with neat sketches assuming pillar
size of 30 m at a depth cover of 200m.
