Time : Three Hours *1346* Max. Marks : 80
_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks & are compulsory.
2. Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
3. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
4. Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
b) A field channel has a culturable commanded area of 2000 hectares. The intensity of 8
Irrigation for gram is 30% & for wheat is 50% Gram has a crop period of 18 days & Kor
depth of 12 cm, while wheat has a Kor period of 15 days & Kor depth of 15 cm. Calculate
the discharge of the field channel.

2. a) Define the following any four. 8
i) Delta, ii) Duty,
iii) Capacity factor, iv) Root zone depth,
v) Field capacity.
3. a) What is mass curve ? How will you determine storage capacity for the reservoir from the 8
mass curve.
b) FIX, FRL, LSL, HFL, & TBL of a reservoir from the following data: 8
i) Effective storage required for crops = 3200 ha – m
ii) Reservoir losses = 20% effective storage.
iii) Carry over allowance = 10% effective storage.
iv) Dead storage = 10 % of gross storage.
v) Flood lift = 3.2m
vi) Free board = 3.0m
Contour RL (m) 81 84 105 108 111
Storage (M-m3) 3.62 4.25 44.75 49.26 59.25

5. a) Explain with a neat sketch of elementary & practical profile of gravity dam. 8
b) A gravity dam is 10 m high. It has top width of 1m & base width 9m. The upstream face is 8
vertical. The water is stored upto the top of the dam. The specific weight of concrete is
24 kN/m2. Test the stability of this dam section against overturning.
OR
6. a) What are the methods of seepage control in an earthen dam? Explain with the help of neat 6
sketches.
c) Compute the discharge over an ogee spillway with coefficient of discharge c = 2.3 at a head 4
of 3.8m. The effective length of ogee spillway is 110 m. Neglect the velocity approach.
b) Design an irrigation channel in fine alluvium to convey a discharge of 30 cumec with a bed 8
slope of 1 in 5000. CVR = 0.9 & Kutter's N = 0.0225. Assume side slopes of 5:1.
OR
8. a) What is the necessity of canal lining ? What are the requirement of canal lining material. 8
b) Using Lacey's theory, design a channel section for the following data : 8
Discharge = 40 m3/sec, silt factor = 1.0, side slope = 1V:0.5H
b) Draw a neat layout of diversion head-works & indicate the various components of the 8
system.
