Midterm Activity 2: Case Analysis

Objective: To practice analyzing problems or questions and assessing hypotheses based on realistic
scenarios. It also encourages critical thinking of different perspectives on the issue of jeepney
modernization and considering the social implications of technological advancement.

Scenario:

The government is planning to phase out old jeepneys and replace them with modernized ones to improve
transportation efficiency. However, there is opposition from some jeepney drivers and operators who
argue that the modernized jeepneys are too expensive and they cannot afford to upgrade their vehicles.

Instructions for Students:

On a short bond paper, provide the following:

1. Write a case background which answers the following questions:

a. What are the reasons for the government's plan to phase out old jeepneys?

b. What are the benefits of modernized jeepneys compared to the old ones?

c. What are the concerns of jeepney drivers and operators about the modernization plan?

d. How will the phase-out plan affect the commuting public?

2. Choose one of the following hypothesis

I. The plan to phase out old jeepneys will have positive impact on transportation efficiency.

II. The modernization plan and the cost of new vehicles will negatively impact jeepney drivers and
operators.

3. Based on the hypothesis you have chosen, what variables are necessary to identify and analyze to
support or refute the hypothesis. Provide at least two. (e.g. perspective of drivers, commuting public
feedback, etc.)

4. Write your insight about the scenario in relation to the interaction of technology development and
society. Your insight should at least answer the following

As a member of the society, what is your stand on such scenario concerning a development with social
implications? Do you agree or disagree to phase out old jeepneys and replace them with modernized
ones? Explain your answer.
