2. Call or email the person and ask for a 30-minute meeting to learn about his or
her job and discuss your job search. Schedule a date, time, and place to meet.
Outline what you will say in your email or phone call, or the message you will
leave, here:
Will leave it in a word doc.
3. Prepare for the meeting. Print your questions from Career Action Worksheet 6-3
or write them in a small notebook. Print two copies of your resume. Bring
business cards if you have them and a few samples of your work, if appropriate.
4. Act professionally. Dress as you would for the job, and plan to arrive a few
minutes early. Take notes, but do not let note-taking interfere with the
conversation. Do not ask for a job or an interview during these meetings, and
end the meeting on time.
5. Follow-up and evaluation. After the meeting:
• Follow up with a thank-you note or email and send a note to the person who
helped you get the meeting.
• Summarize what you learned and store your notes in your Career Builder
Files.
• Take the time to evaluate the process, from greeting the person to saying
good-bye. Think about what happened, what was different from what you
expected, what went well, and what you would do differently next time.
Be prepared to tell the class about your meeting or write a short summary of the
meeting.
