Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis is a form
of therapy that aims to
explore the unconscious
mind in order to help
individuals understand
their behavior and
emotions.
Sigmund Freud
It was developed by Sigmund
Freud in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries and has
since evolved and been
adapted by numerous other
psychoanalysts.
Psychoanalysis
● The fundamental concept of psychoanalysis is that
the human mind is composed of both conscious
and unconscious components,
● Unconscious conflicts, desires, and repressed
emotions can lead to psychological problems.
● Main reasons are because of the :patient's past
experiences, including childhood experiences and
relationships, as well as their current thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors.
Psychoanalysis
● a form of psychotherapy based
on understanding the
unconscious mental processes
that determine a person's
thoughts, actions, and feelings.
● Therapy helps identify and relate
these unconscious processes to
the person and any psychological
or physical problems they may
be experiencing.
Example
Every time the vehicle she is riding in
stops suddenly, Mrs. Smith panics. She
thinks this is because she was in a car
accident when she was a child, and in
each new situation the fear of another
accident crashes over her like a wave.
Rational Choice
This theory states that
individuals use their
self-interests to make
choices that will provide
them with the greatest
benefit. People weigh
their options and make
the choice they think will
serve them best.
Adam Smith
Philosopher Adam Smith is
considered the originator of
rational choice theory. His
essay “An Inquiry into the
Nature and Causes of the
Wealth of Nations,” from 1776,
proposed human nature's
tendency toward self-interest
resulted in prosperity.
Rational Choice
● Individuals use rational calculations to make
rational choices and achieve outcomes that
are aligned with their own personal
objectives
● Using rational choice theory, it is estimated
that the outcomes provide people with the
greatest benefit and satisfaction given the
choices they have available.
Example
One individual may decide that
abstaining from smoking is best for
them because they want to protect
their health. Another individual will
decide they want to smoke because it
relieves their stress.
Institutionalism
Institutional theory is
an approach to
understanding
organizations and
management practices
as the product of social
rather than economic
pressures.
John Meyer &
Brian Rowan
Institutional theory was
introduced in the late 1970s by
John Meyer and Brian Rowan as
a means to explore further how
organizations fit with, are
related to, and were shaped by
their societal, state, national,
and global environments.
Institutionalism
● In sociology and organizational studies,
institutional theory is a theory on the deeper
and more resilient aspects of social
structure. It considers the processes by
which structures, including schemes, rules,
norms, and routines, become established as
authoritative guidelines for social behavior.
Example
a national education system can be seen
as an institution (maybe you have heard
the phrase 'institution of education')
because it has norms, a social structure,
rules of governance, policies, etc., that
can shape action and thinking in local
school organizations.
