Introduction

Long term retention of the mathematical knowledge in the memory of

the students is the common dilemma of the teachers. The diversities of the

student’s learning need various and effective teaching strategies for teaching

to have a successful learning. But the daily performance is satisfactory while

the student’s retention is poor that can be showed from their summative test

and their quarterly examination results.

Poor retention of the students in the acquisition of mathematical

knowledge is an unending battle of mathematics teachers in Columbio

National High School considering that there are some determinants that can

really affect their retention competence. These determinants are the

internal/personal aspects of the students in terms of math-phobia, interest,

self-confidence and study habit; and the external determinants in terms of

social media addiction, parents support, family structure, nutrition, community

and teaching strategy.

Since teaching strategies is a teacher-related aspect, the DepEd

started to embrace 21st century curriculum. In this curriculum, the

Mathematics 7 modules has real-life integration. The researcher wanted to

find out solutions to enhance retention competence of the students using the

real-life mathematics context approach integrated to the daily lesson group

activities anchored from DepEd K to 12 Teaching Modules.
