Introductory Message
Welcome to Mathematics 10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers,
parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This
will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the
independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities
and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

Solving Problems on Circles

I. Learning Competency with Code

Solve problems on circle (M10GE-II-f-2)

II. Background Information for Learners

In this lesson, you will learn to understand and think deeper on every
problem associated with circles as you relate it to the problems that you will
encounter in your life. To solve problems correctly, you need to familiarize
the theorems related to circle and apply a systematic way in solving it. Your
learnings on this topic will help you become a good problem solver in the
future.
You may apply the suggested steps in problem solving.
1. Read and analyze the problem
2. Know what is asked
3. Identify the given
4. Illustrate the figure and determine the formula to be used
5. Solve and simplify
6. Check your answer
Example:
You are standing 12 feet from a water tower. The distance from you to a
point of tangency on the tower is 24 feet. What is the radius of the
tower?

Solution:
Step 1. Read and analyze the problem.
Step 2. Know what is asked.
The radius of the tower
Step 3. Identify the given.
Your distance from the water tower is 12 feet
Your distance from the point of tangency on the tower is 24 feet

1
Step 4. Illustrate the figure and determine the formula to be used.

ABC is a right triangle. Then, the formula to be used is Pythagorean

Theorem Formula: c2 = a2 + b2
The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two sides.
c2 = a2 + b2, where
c = 12 ft + r hypotenuse
a=r shorter leg
b = 24 ft longer leg
Step 5. Solve and simplify
a. Substitute the given to the formula c2 = a2 + b2
(12+r)2 = r2 + (24)2
(12 + r)(12 +r) = r2 + (24)(24) Expanded form of the given
equation
O
F
(12 + r)(12 + r) Perform the FOIL Method
I L

F = (12)(12) = 144 F – first term of the 1st and 2ndbinomials

O = 12(r) = 12r O – outer term of the 1st and 2nd binomials
I = r(12) = 12r I – inner term of the1st and 2nd binomials
L = r(r) = r2 L – last term of the1st and 2nd binomials
144 + 24r + r2 = r2+ 576
144 + 24r +r2 - r2 = r2 - r2 + 576 Combine similar terms
144 -144 +24r = 576 -144
24r = 432 Simplify the resulting
equation
1 1
(24r) = (432) Apply Multiplication Property
24 24
of Equality. Multiply both
sides by the multiplicative
1
inverse of 24 which is
24
r = 18 ft Simplified form (the value of r)
Step 6. Check your answer
To Check: if r = 18
(12+r)2 = r2 + 242
(12+18)2 = 182 + 242
302 = 324+576
900 =✓900
The value of r = 18 satisfies the equation.
Therefore, the radius of a tower is 18 feet.
