Lesson 1: Illustrating Finite and Infinite
Geometric Sequence
Hello! Welcome to our session today. This is good for one day only. We will
be differentiating a finite geometric sequence and infinite geometric
sequence. Are you excited? I am glad you can stay with me. Learn and enjoy
with this lesson.

What I Need To Know

At the end of lesson, you should be able to:
1. determine the first term(a1), common ratio (r), last term(an), and
the number of terms (n); and
2. illustrate a finite geometric sequence and an infinite geometric
sequence.

What I Know
Answer the following questions. Give what is being asked. (Please write
your answer in your Mathematics activity notebook?
1. Given the geometric sequence of 5, 20, 80, 320, ..., what is the common
ratio?
2. How many terms are there in a geometric sequence 1, 6, 36,..., 1 296?
3. What is the last term of a given sequence – 2, 14, -98, ..., 4 802?
4. What is the next term of the geometric sequence 1, -4, 16, -64, 256, _?
5. In the geometric sequence 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, ..., what is the last term?
6. Given the geometric sequence 4,20, 80, 400, ..., how many terms are
there?
th
7. What is the 10 term of a geometric sequence of 1 024, -256, 64, -16, 4, -
1,...?
8. If the common ratio of the geometric sequence is -3 and the first term is 6,
what are the six terms of the sequence?
9. Given the common ratio of 4, the first term is 2, and the last term is 512?
How many terms are there?
10. In the given geometric sequence of 400, 80, 16, ,..., what is the
common ratio?

I. Determine whether the given sequence is finite or infinite

geometric sequence.
1. 1, 5, 25, 125, 625
2. -5, 15, -45, 135, ..., 1 215
3. 2, 12, 72, 432, ...

What’s In
Previously you learned about arithmetic and geometric sequence.
This sequence is either finite or infinite. For the geometric sequence we need
to differentiate a finite geometric sequence from an infinite geometric
sequence. To be able to do this, we need to determine the first term;
common ratio, last term and number of terms, then you are going to
illustrate a finite or an infinite geometric sequence.

What’s New
In your previous lesson, you deal with geometric sequence, right!
Let’s try if you can still recall what you have learned in the previous lessons.
Let’s explore Answer the following:
1. Given the first term which is 4 and the common ratio which is 3 of a
geometric sequence, write the first 6 term of the sequence.
2. If the common ratio in a geometric sequence is -5 and the first term is 2,
th
what is the 6 term?
3. In a geometric sequence 5, 10, 20,..., How many terms are there in a
sequence and what is the last term?
Solution:
In problem number 1, the given are the first term which is 4, and the
common ratio which is 3 and we are asked to write the first 6 terms.
Solution:
The first term which is 4 will be multiplied by the common ratio 3 to
get the next term which 12. In other word, to get the next term multiply the
preceding term by the common ratio and the six (6) term of the
sequence is 4, 12, 36, 108, 324,972
In problem number 2, the given are the common ratio which is -5,
the first term which is 2 and number of terms which is 6.
Solution:
r = -5 a1 = 2 n=6

By using the formula an = a1rn-1 you will find the 6 term.

th

Substitute the value of the first term = 2, the common ratio = -5,
and number of terms = 6 in an = a1rn-1

a6 = 2(-5)6-1

Simplify the result a6 = 2(-5)5

a6 = 2(-3 125)
a6 = 6 250

2
DO_Q1_ Mathematics 10_ Module 7
th
Therefore, the 6 term of the sequence is 6 250
In problem number 3, the given is a geometric sequence 5, 10, 20, …, we are
asked how many terms there are, and what the last term is.
Solution:
No specific number of terms, the terms are continuous. Last term cannot be
identified.
Since you already understand about geometric sequence, let us proceed to
our lesson proper. Before discussing the details of the lesson, try to answer
this;
Let’s try this
Determine the first term, common ratio, last term, and number of
terms of the given geometric sequence.
Copy and complete the table.

4. …, 4, 2, 1,
5. 4, 12, 36, 108,…
Answer the following questions:
1. What have you observed with the sequences?
2. What type of geometric sequence is it?

What Is It

Based on the above activity, you have the following steps to solve each.
Steps Geometric sequences Discussion
Item no. 1 First term (a1) = 64

Common ratio (r) =

Last term (an) = none
Number of terms (n) = cannot be determine
64, 16, 4, 1,.... Since we can only determine the first term
1 and the common difference the sequence is
an infinite geometric sequence. The
three (3) dots tell us that the terms are
continuous.

3
DO_Q1_ Mathematics 10_ Module 7
Item no. 2 First term (a1) = 3
Common ratio (r) = 2
Last term (an) = 48
3, 6, 12, 24, 48 Number of terms (n) = 5
This sequence is a finite geometric
2 sequence since it has a first term (a1),
common ratio (r), last term (an), and
number of terms (n).

Item no. 3 First term (a1) = -2

Common ratio (r) = -3
-2, 6, -18,.., 486 Last term (an) = 486

Number of terms (n) = 6

By listing the complete set in the
sequence, we will get -2, 6, -18, 54, -162,
3
486.This sequence is a finite geometric
sequence since it has a first term (a1),
common ratio (r), last term (an), and
number of terms (n).
Item no. 4 First term (a1) = Cannot be determined

Common ratio (r) =

..., 4, 2, 1, Last term (an) =
Number of terms (n) = cannot be determine
Since we can only determine the last term
and the common difference the sequence is
an infinite geometric sequence. The
4 three (3) dots tell us that the terms are
Continuous backward.
Item no. 5 First term (a1) = 3
Common ratio (r) = 2
Last term (an) = none
4, 12, 36, 108,... Number of terms (n) = cannot be determine
Since we can only determine the first term
and the common difference the sequence is
an infinite geometric sequence. The
three (3) dots tell us that the terms are
5
continuous.
1. Sequences 1 and 5 have only first term (a1), and a common ratio.
While sequence 2 and 3 have first term (a1), common ratio (r), last
term (a1), and number of terms (n). Sequence 4 has only common
ratio (r) and a last term (r).

4
DO_Q1_ Mathematics 10_ Module 7
2. Sequence 2 and 3 is a finite geometric sequence, while sequence 1,
4, and 5 is an infinite geometric sequence.
Finite geometric sequence defines as a1, a1r1, a1r2, a1r3, ...,
a1rn-1. It is a geometric sequence with a first term, common ratio,
number of terms, or last term. It has fixed number of terms, while infinite
geometric sequence defines as a1, a1r1, a1r2, a1r3, …. It has a first
term and a common ratio but no last term, the three dots tell us that the
numbers of terms are continuous.
Other examples of a finite geometric sequence.
1. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
First term (a1) = 1
Common Difference (r) = 2
Last term (an) = 16
Number of terms (N) = 5
2. 3, -6, 12, -24, 48, -96
First term (a1) = 3
Common Difference (r) = -2
Last term (an) = -96
Number of terms (N) = 6
Other examples of an infinite geometric sequence.
1. 2, 6, 18, 54,…

First term (a1) = 2

Common ratio (r) = -3
The number of terms cannot be found, so, there’s no last
term. That is why 2, 6, 18, 54,... is an infinite geometric sequence.
2. , , ,…
First term (a1) =
Common ratio(r)
=
The number of terms cannot be found, so, there’s no last term.

Based on the example given, did you understand a finite and an

infinite geometric sequence? If you have question let me know. If you
already understand, let’s try to perform the activity.
