18. Pull back plunger to check for blood. Inject


the medication slowly and withdraws the
needle smoothly at the same angle it was
inserted.

19. Apply gentle pressure to the site with a dry


cotton swab. Do not massage the area.

20. Assist the patient to a position of comfort.

21. Dispose of needle and syringe according to


institution’s policy. Do not recap used needle.

22. Remove gloves (if used).

23. Perform hand hygiene

medication in the kardex and the patient’s
