Problems: Buoyancy and flotation

Instructions: Perform the following problems. For each problem, write the problem in English and its translation in
Spanish, or vice versa. Use this format as an example.

Problem No. X (English) Problem No. X (Spanish)

Solution:

Problems:

1. A rectangular scow 7 ft by 18 ft by 36 ft long; its load of garbage has its center of gravity 2 ft above the
waterline, as shown in figure. Is the scow stable for this configuration?

2. The barge shown in figure has the form of a parallelepiped having dimensions 15 m by 26.7 m by 3 m. The
barge weighs 4450 kN when loaded and has a center of gravity 4 m from the bottom. Find the metacentric
height for a rotation about its longest centerline and determine whether or not the barge is stable.

3. Figure illustrates the hull of a barge which, when fully charged, weighs 150 kN. Items (b) to (d) show the top,
front and side views of the boat, respectively. Note the location of the center of gravity, cg. Determine if the
pot stable in fresh water.

4. A prismatic object 8 in thick by 8 in wide by 16 in long is weighed in water at a depth of 20 in and found to
weigh 11.0 lb. What is its weight in air and its specific gravity?
5. What fraction of the volume of a solid piece of metal of sp gr 7.25 floats above the surface of a container of
mercury of sp gr 13.57?

6. A rectangular open box, 7.6 m by 3 m in plan and 3.7 m deep, weighs 350 kN and is launched in fresh water,
(a) How deep will it sink? (b) If the water is 3.7 m deep, what weight of stone placed in the box will cause it
to rest on the bottom?
