SEASONS
Seasons are annual changes in weather. There are four seasons each year: summer, autumn, winter and
spring. Each season lasts for three months, and these months are different for those living in the
Southern Hemisphere compared to the Northern Hemisphere.
Earth is tilted on an imaginary line that runs between the North
23.4 N
* and South Pole (called an axis). When the South Pole is facing
the sun, it means the Southern Hemisphere is in summer, while
the Northern Hemisphere is in winter, facing space. It takes the
earth one year to revolve around the sun, and during this time
S each hemisphere experiences weather changes associated with
the amount of sunlight and warmth it receives.
Summer is the warmest in temperature of all the seasons and winter is the coolest. Autumn and spring
are shoulder seasons where plants and animals prepare for the warmer and cooler months.

Mother bought two piglets. She had a big pen ready for them.
"Can you help me take care of them?", she told Andrea.
"Of course, Mother" said Andrea. "I'll help you take care of
them."
So Andrea became the caretaker of the piglets. She cleaned
the pen early in the morning and gave them baths. She fed them
well with left overs which she got from their neighbors.
Soon the pigs grew big and fat. When they were ready for sale,
Andrea felt sad. She knew Mother would get a good price for
them but she would lose her pets.

Memorial Day
Reading Comprehension
Memorial Day is an American holiday that takes place on the last Monday in May. It is a
day that honors men and women who have died serving in the United States military.
This holiday requires a special way to raise the United States flag. At sunrise, a person
raises the flag and then lowers it halfway or half mast. This represents the fallen men
and women who served in the military. At noon, the flag is raised to full staff to honor
those who are currently serving in the military.
Many families honor their loved ones by visiting a cemetery or memorial. Other people
attend parades where they listen to music, marching bands and speeches given to
honor those who have served. Most people wear red, white and blue, the colors of the
United States flag.
Even though Memorial Day is a fun three day weekend, filled with swimming and BBQ, it
is important to remember the real reason for the holiday. Memorial Day allows people to
honor the men and women who have died serving in the military and those who are
currently serving in the military.
