GE 07: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIETY

ACTIVITY 2

Watch an 18-minute TEDx talk by Hannu Rajaniemi, The Big History of Modern
Science. Write a short essay (1 page only) on the topic, "Why is it important to study the
history of Science and Technology?" based on what you have learned from the video.

The big history of modern science made me realize that there is always a reason
for the existence of one thing. There are so many questions in our universe that we only
dream and fail to identify it. As people becomes more conscious and inquisitive, new
discoveries are made. In the short video explain by Hannu Rajaniemi, a mathematical
physicist, science pioneer, and author, discussed his viewpoint that science and
technology are some of the most significant forces influencing societal change in his talk
titled "The Big History of Modern Science."

The talk discussed how the term "Henriette" refers to a woman who performs
calculations, Edwin Hubble who used her method to find that there are other distant
galaxies that are similar to our Milky Way Galaxy, Szilard who discovered the atomic
power that split atoms, leading to the invention of the destructive atomic bomb, Einstein
and his equations that work extremely well to the point that all of our phones today use
GPS, and Marie Curie discovery in element radium that could be a source of power for
utopian society, radium in product like chocolates and face cream and to treat cancer.
They make contributions to the world's advancement. Consider the massive galaxies that
were made up of tiny stars, the discovery of atoms as the tiniest object, and how
transistors were able to create weapons that could unleash a global calamity. Learning
about the evolution of science and technology is crucial because it plays a significant role
in the knowledge and access to human progress that will benefit society and future
generations of people. By knowing how those people created new discoveries we are
allowing our thoughts to expand and think outside the boundaries of our knowledge. Even
modern science and technology that we deal with and employ today are products of
history's great discoverers. The history provides individuals who are new to the field with
a foundational understanding as it develops swiftly. It explains people how natural world
works and lead us to perplexity.

From learning the history of science and technology, we understand more how the
world functions and we learned to appreciate the struggles and we have also come to
respect the brilliance and hardships of those who have made contributions to the world's
advancement. It tells us how imaginative people learn about science and technology and
apply it to meet human needs that will be beneficial to us and the generations that follow.
