1. What are three brainstorming methods you can follow if you are having trouble

choosing a topic ?

● Personal Inventory: a quick inventory of your experiences, interests, hobbies,

skills and beliefs. This list is a general subject area.

● Clustering: People, places, things, events, processes, etc then list 4-5 things that

comes to mind

● Internet Search: Browsing through the subject based website.

2. What are 2 general purposes of most classroom speeches ? How do they differ? To

inform or to persuade. When you are informing your aim is to enhance the knowledge

and understanding of your listeners. To persuade you want to change the attitude or

structure of your audience.

3. Why is determining the specific purpose important when preparing your speech?

Why is it important to include your audience in the specific purpose statement? The

specific purpose should focus on one aspect of the topic. When the audience slips out the

specific purpose it may slip out of the speaker's consciousness.

4. What are 5 tips for formulating your specific purpose?

● Write the purpose statement as a phrase

● Express your purpose as statement

● Avoid figurative language

● Limit your purpose statement to one idea

● Make sure your specific purpose is not too vague.

5. What are five questions to ask about your specific purpose?

 ● Does my purpose meet the assignment?

● Can I accomplish my purpose in the time allotted?

● Is the purpose relevant to my audience?

● Is the purpose too trivial for my audience?

● Is my purpose too technical for my audience?

6. What is the difference between the specific purpose and the central idea of a speech?

What are the four guidelines for an effective central idea? Central idea is a concise

statement of what you expect to say ( thesis statement). It sums up the major idea of your

speech. The specific purpose is what the speaker sets out to accomplish in the speech.
