Immigration Registration
Irish Immigration Services website: https://www.irishimmigration.ie/

When you arrive in Ireland, the Immigration officer at the airport/point of entry will place a ‘landing
stamp’ in your passport to give you temporary immigration permission to stay here. This stamp
identifies how long you can stay. You must visit the registration office in Dublin, or the local Garda
station if you are outside of Dublin, before your landing stamp expires to extend your immigration
permission and register your details.

Phone the registration office or local Garda station to make your appointment as soon as possible as
appointments are generally booked weeks ahead, especially in Dublin.
Confirm with the officer which documents are required to bring with to your appointment. If you
have a partner/spouse and children, confirm the documents required at the appointment for them.

Driving Licence
As a visitor to Ireland, you can drive on a driving licence from any state outside the EU/EEA for up to
one year provided the driving licence is current and valid. However, on taking up 'normal residence'
in Ireland you must either exchange your driving licence or apply for a driving licence in Ireland.
Ireland has agreements with certain countries/states that designates them as recognised states for
the purposes of driving licence exchange.

A Recognised State driving licence may be exchanged up to a maximum of one year after it expires
with an accompanying letter of entitlement. After this period, applicants will need to apply for a
learner permit.

Schools
The Irish education system is made up of primary school and post-primary (secondary) school.
You must ensure that your child gets a certain minimum education from the age of 6 to the age
of 16 or until they have completed 3 years of post-primary education. Many people continue on
after post-primary to further education and third-level education. State-funded education is
available at all levels unless you choose to send your child to a private school.
