ACCENT DISCRIMINATION IN CANADA

In Canada, many people come from all around the globe for various purposes. As we know English is the
universal language however people are judged and discriminated on the basis of their accent of English.
It is now known that women that used to emigrate from different places such as united states to Canada
were not recognized as immigrants. Also the Black women that were living in Canada for generations
was asked about their existence as “where are they form”?

It is very rare to speak the English language in a Canadian accent coming from the different country. The
people come from the different country find it difficult and are judged on the basis of their accent. The
writer of the article trying to convey the message that local people of the Canada sometimes ask the
people coming from a different country to repeat themselves, and used to laugh at people that was not
supposed to be laugh at, just because they did not understand the word pronunciation and its meaning.
Author also stated that the local people used to judge people on the basis of their skin colour. Black
women was not treated right and considered as the foreigner already just because of the skin they had.

The local people of the Canada had this thought in mind that they would not talk to the people coming
from the different countries as they would have different and unique accent which would not be easy to
understand by them. Reactions like this affects the moral and confidence of the people coming from the
different countries. The writer of the article kept asking questions as people would accept him or not
just because he has different and unique accent.

Accent discrimination reflects a bad and negative social impact. It also affect the people who are coming
for a job on the basis their accent. Whenever a teacher is required in English, journalism, or the
advertising, the women that were there from south region was discriminated on the basis of accent
that they had or just because they were not from the same country and not native speakers. It was
decided on the basis of their accent that who will get selected, who is a native speaker, and who is not.

The women who belongs to South had the different accent as compared to the people that was living in
United States, and got denied for the employment just because of non-native accent that they had.

From both the articles we have seen that the women from south was not accepted just because they
have the different accent. They also suffered due to unemployment.
