We saw how an inquiring attitude or propensity for asking questions about


oneself, how people behave, how societies evolve, and how nature functions and
evolves, is the beginning of the philosophical endeavor. History abounds with
persons who developed their questions into focused inquiries. Let us look at
some highlights so as to have a holistic perspective.

GREEKS
➢ Pythagoras, a well-known mathematician and philosopher, was the
first to use the term “Philosophy.” LE
➢ Etymologically, philosophy comes from the Greek words “philo” and
“sophia” which means “love of wisdom.”
➢ To seek for truth and live it is what the Greeks emphasized as love

for wisdom. For them knowledge is not enough if one does not know
how to live and practice what one knows.

CHINESE

❖ Philosophy for the Chinese comes from the words “zhe” and “xue”
which means “wisdom” and “study”, respectively. Therefore, it

simply means “the study of wisdom.”


❖ For the Chinese, “zhe” is symbolized by the human mouth and human
hands which reflect their conviction that philosophy is authentic
only when one puts into action what one preaches.
