Annapurna Finance Private Applies


for Universal Bank License Banking
• Reserve Bank of India has received an application from
Bhubaneswar based Annapurna Finance Private Limited formerly
known as Annapurna Microfinance Private Limited, under the
Guidelines for ‘on tap’ Licensing of Universal Banks in the Private
Sector issued on 1st August 2016.

• Universal banking is a system of banking where banks undertake


a blanket of financial services like investment banking, commercial
banking, development banking, insurance and other financial
services including functions of merchant banking, mutual funds,
factoring, housing finance, insurance etc.

• In simple words, Universal Banking means that Financial


Institutions (FIs) and Banks are allowed to undertake all kinds of
activity of banking , financing and related businesses.

Eligiblity
• Individuals/professionals who are ‘residents’ and have 10 years of
experience in banking and finance at a senior level.

• Entities/groups in the private sector that are ‘owned and controlled by


residents’ [as defined in FEMA Regulations, as amended from time to
time] and have a successful track record for at least 10 years, provided
that if such entity/group has total assets of ₹ 50 billion or more, the non-
financial business of the group does not account for 40 per cent or more
in terms of total assets/in terms of gross income.

• The initial minimum paid-up voting equity capital for a bank shall be ₹ five
billion

• The bank shall get its shares listed on the stock exchanges within six
years of the commencement of business by the bank. The bank shall
open at least 25 per cent of its branches in unbanked rural centres

• SBM Bank (India) Limited (Subsidiary of SBM Group) and DBS Bank
India Limited (Subsidiary of DBS Bank Ltd.) have been issued licence on
December 6, 2017 and October 4, 2018 respectively for carrying on
banking business in India through Wholly Owned Subsidiary (WOS) mode

• The Start-up India scheme was launched on January 16, 2016 by


the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade with
the goal of supporting and promoting start-ups in India.

Eligibility Criteria for Startup Recognition:

• The Startup should be incorporated as a private limited company or


registered as a partnership firm or a limited liability partnership

• Turnover should be less than INR 100 Crores in any of the previous
financial years

• An entity shall be considered as a startup up to 10 years from the date of


its incorporation

• The Startup should be working towards innovation/ improvement of


existing products, services and processes and should have the potential
to generate employment/ create wealth. An entity formed by splitting up
or reconstruction of an existing business shall not be considered a
"Startup“.

President assents CrPC (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2021

• The President of India Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Code
of Criminal Procedure (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2021 which empowers
the administration to register criminal cases against those who are staging
protests in violation of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure

Section 144 of CrPC

• Enacted in 1973, Section 144 empowers the magistrate of any state or


union territory in India to prohibit the assembly of four or more people so
that law and order can be protected in an area.

• Section 144 can be directed against a particular individual or persons


residing in a particular place or area or to the general public.

• The order passed under Section 144 can remain in force only for two
months from initiation of the order. It can be extended but not more than 6
months and have to reviewed thereafter.

• Violation of Section 144 is liable for a maximum of 3 years imprisonment.

Amendment:

• The CrPC (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2021 amended Section 195 (1) (a) (ii)

• According to the bill, the breach of the magisterial order will be regarded as
a cognisable offence under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 188
(disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant), and a
public authority can arrest an accused without a warrant.

• The maximum punishment for violators under the Section 188 of the Indian
Penal Code is 6 months jail.

• Before this amendment, the state (police) can only detain violators for a
limited period of time

• Once this bill becomes law, the Gujarat government, police commissioners
and district magistrates will be empowered to issue prohibitory orders,
restricting any person from a certain act or for prevention of disturbance of
public tranquillity or a riot or an affray to maintain public order on various
occasions.

• Narayan Rane, Union Minister for Micro Small &


Medium enterprises (MSME) inaugurated an India
made Intelligent Tray Retrieval System (ITRS)
manufactured by M/s SJK Innovations Private Limited
at MOPA (Goa) International airport, officially renamed
as Manohar International Airport, Mopa, Goa.

• This “Made in India” ITRS system is also “Patented in


India”.

• The machine is equipped with image analysis software


with advanced tools for effortless screening and also
contains a dedicated module for high threat baggage
that needs immediate attention at the airport.

Govt Approves Rs 28.11 crore for
Andhra Pradesh Tobacco Farmers National

• Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, approved


Rs 28.11 crore to provide immediate relief to over 28,000 Tobacco
farmers affected by Cyclone Mandous in Andhra Pradesh.

• The fund extends a special interest-free loan of Rs 10,000 to each


member of Tobacco Boards Growers Welfare Schemes, which
shall benefit around 28,112 farmers

• The interest-free loan to the eligible Tobacco farmers will be


administered by the Tobacco Board, a statutory body under the
Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

• The name, ‘Mandous’, was suggested by the United Arab


Emirates in 2020 as a member of the World Meteorological
Organisation

Silent Valley Bird Survey
• A recent bird survey conducted at Silent Valley National Park in Kerala National
identified a total of 175 species, with 17 of those being newly recorded.

• These additions bring the total number of identified species up to 175,


with an impressive 139 species identified in the 2006 survey and 142 in
the 2014 survey

• Silent Valley National Park Located in the Nilgiri hills on the border of
Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Silent Valley National Park

• The park is located within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, that also includes
the Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary, New Amarambalam Reserved Forest,
and Nedumkayam Rainforest in Nilambur Taluk of Malappuram district,
Attappadi Reserved Forest in Mannarkkad Taluk of Palakkad district, and
Mukurthi National Park of Nilgiris district.

• The Bhavani River, a tributary of the Kaveri River, and the Kunthipuzha
River, a tributary of the Bharathappuzha river, both have their origins in
the area around Silent Valley.

• The Kadalundi River also has its origin in Silent Valley.

Pushan-Alpha as a rideshare on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket,
carrying Transporter-6 mission to the low earth orbit from Space
Launch Complex 40 (at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in
Florida, United States

• The Pushan-Alpha mission is named after the Hindu Solar (Sun)


Deity considered as the God of journeys and protector of
travellers.

• This launch will complement Digantara’s ROBust Integrating


(ROBI) Proton Fluence Meter Mission that was launched on the
Indian Space Research Organisation PSLV C53 on June 30, 2022.

• It was world’s first commercial space-based space weather

India Identifies two Lithium and one Copper
mine in Argentina for Acquisition National

• The Indian government has proclaimed that they have identified


two lithium mines and one copper mine in Argentina and they are
moving forward to acquiring it or taking long term lease.

• Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (Kabil) will have ownership or leasing


rights to the mines.

• Khanij Bidesh India Ltd is a joint venture between the National


Aluminium Company (Nalco), Hindustan Copper (HCL), and
Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd.

• Lithium reserves have been found in all the continents but Chile,
Argentina and Bolivia together are referred to as the “Lithium
Triangle”- more than 75 percent of the world supply.

Veteran Sinologist Janaki Ballabh passed away
Obituary
• Veteran Sinologist Janaki Ballabh, an Indian translator and
writer, who translated a range of Chinese works into Hindi,
passed away in Beijing, China

• He lived and worked in China as a Hindi Language expert


from 1956 to the years immediately following the Cultural
Revolution.

• He was honoured with Peace and Friendship Award 1961 by


former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai for his contributions to
cultural exchange between China and India.

• Sinologist – a person who studies or is an expert in the


academic study of China primarily through Chinese
language, literature, and history.
