• Warehousing Development Regulatory
Authority has signed a memorandum of
understanding with the State Bank of India to
help farmers in getting low-interest-rate loans.

• The Memorandum of Understanding was

signed to promote awareness about the new
loan product called ‘Produce Marketing Loan’
to exclusively fund against e-NWRs (electronic
Negotiable Warehouse Receipt).

Retail Inflation Eases to 5.72% In December 2022

• According to data provided by the Ministry of

Statistics and Programme Implementation,
Retail Inflation as measured by the Consumer
Price Index decreased to a one-year low of
5.72% in December 2022.

• In November 2022, the retail inflation rate was

5.88%.

• India’s wholesale price inflation slipped to a 22-

month low of 4.95% in December 2022 from
5.85% in November

Alibaba Sells 3.1% Stake in Paytm

• China's Alibaba Group sold a 3.1% stake in Paytm for

USD 125 million through a block deal.

• Alibaba, which owned a 6.26% stake in Paytm as of

September 2022, sold its stake at Rs 536.95 a piece.

• A block deal is defined as a trade wherein more than

500,000 shares or shares worth a value exceeding
Rs. 5 Crores, of a particular company listed on the
exchange, are traded.

Apax Partners Sells its Entire Stake in Shriram Finance

• Apax Partners’ subsidiary Dynasty Acquisition

is likely to sell its entire stake, up to 1.73 crore
shares or 4.63 percent stake, in Shriram
Finance through a block deal.

• In 2015, Apax had acquired a stake in Shriram

City from TPG Capital. Presently, Apex holds a
4.63 percent stake in Shriram Finance

Jallikattu celebrations begin in Madurai
• The bull-taming sport of Jallikattu, also known as ‘Eru Thazhuvuthal’ and
‘Mancuvirattu’, has begun in full swing in the Palamedu of Madurai district.

• This traditional event, which is a part of the Pongal celebrations and is

held on the day of Mattu Pongal, is a sport where a bull is let loose among
a crowd, and participants attempt to take control of the bull by holding on
to its hump for as long as they can.

• Before the Jallikattu event, the ‘Mann Kuthal’ process takes place where
bulls are trained to develop their skills by digging their horns in the wet
earth. The bulls are prepared to attack when someone tries to catch their
hump.

• The sport is a traditional way of preserving pure breed native bulls for the
peasant community.

• In Karnataka Jallikattu is called Kambala. Except in Karnataka and Tamil

Nadu, the sport is banned in other states such as Punjab, Andhra
Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Kollam: India’s First Constitution Literate District
• Indian district of Kollam has become the country’s first
constitution literate district.

• The district’s success is the result of a seven-month

campaign launched by the Kollam district panchayat,
District Planning Committee, and the Kerala Institute of
Local Administration to educate citizens about the
country’s laws and their rights.

• The campaign aimed to provide constitutional literacy

to 23 lakh citizens

• Kollam, also known as Quilon, is an ancient port city

located on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake in the
Indian state of Kerala.

“Womaniya” initiative
• The Government e-Marketplace has launched a new initiative called
“Womaniya on GeM” to empower women entrepreneurs and women self-
help groups to sell their products directly to various government
ministries, departments, and institutions.

• The initiative aligns with the government’s initiatives for Micro, Small and
Medium Enterprises especially to reserve 3% in government procurement
from women entrepreneurs.

• This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5:

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

• The CEO of GeM is S Radha Chauhan.

• GeM is a 100% government-owned company set up under the aegis of

Ministry of Commerce and Industry for procurement of common use
goods and services by government ministries, departments, and CPSEs.

Waterways and Communication
• India’s first School of Logistics, Waterways, and Communication
was launched in Agartala.

• The school aims to enable the rich pool of talent in the region to
become world-class experts in the transportation and logistics
sector.

• The school is set up under the State Institute of Public

Administration and Rural Development and will facilitate in
conducting studies/research, training, workshops/seminars for
stakeholders like businesses, exporters/importers, Chambers of
Commerce and Industries, local entrepreneurs, tourist operators,
etc.

VARUNA Naval Exercise between India and France
• According to the Ministry of Defence, the 21st edition
of “Varuna” the bilateral naval exercise between India
and France commenced

• This edition of the exercise will witness participation of

indigenous guided missile stealth destroyer INS
Chennai, INS Teg, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I and
Dornier, integral helicopters and MiG29K fighter
aircraft.
‘ICGS Kamla Devi’: Last Vessel of FPV Kapil Kathpal

Series Commissioned in Kolkata

• The Indian Coast Guard Ship "Kamla Devi," the fifth and last
vessel in the series of fast-patrol vessels was commissioned in
Kolkata

• The vessel was built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders

and Engineers Ltd. Kolkata, in a public-private partnership with
Titagarh Wagons Limited

• The ICGS Kamladevi is named after ‘Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay’,

a social reformer and freedom activist who advocated for the
advancement of artisans and craftsmen across India as well as the
promotion of the performing arts.

• She was awarded the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and

Ramon Magsaysay Award.

• Russian VTB Bank, Russia’s second-largest

bank, launched direct payments in rupees

• In November 2022, 9 Russian banks, including

VTB, opened unique vostro accounts in India to

Mexico Imposes Anti-Smoking Laws

• Mexico has recently imposed one of the world’s

strictest anti-tobacco laws, setting in force a total ban
on smoking in public places, including hotels, beaches,
and parks.

• The new law, which is part of the country’s General

Law for Tobacco Control reform, came into force and
will also see the total ban on the promotion,
advertising, and sponsorship of tobacco products. The
sale and use of e-cigarettes and vapes are also due to
face new restrictions.

ACC extends tenure of Bank of Baroda MD Sanjiv Chadha
• Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of the Department of
Financial Services for extending the term of Managing Director
and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Baroda Sanjiv Chadha for
about five months till June 30, 2023

• Financial Services Institutions Bureau recommended elevation of

Executive Director Debadatta Chand as MD of BoB.

• FSIB also recommended Union Bank of India ED Rajneesh

Karnataka for the position of MD & CEO in Bank of India.

• FSIB recommends for directors of state-owned banks and financial

institutions, and is headed by former secretary, Department of
Personnel and Training (DoPT), Bhanu Pratap Sharma.

India Create World Record
• The Indian cricket team achieved a historic victory over Sri Lanka
in the third and final match of the series at the Greenfield Stadium
in Thiruvananthapuram.

• India defeated Sri Lanka by 317 runs, breaking New Zealand’s 15-
year-old record for the largest victory margin in ODI cricket.

• The previous record was held by New Zealand, who achieved a

win of 290 runs against Ireland in 2008.

• India put up a total of 390 on the board

• Sri Lanka could only manage a total of 73 runs

• This victory also puts India on top of the list for highest victory
margins by runs in ODIs.

Viacom18 bagged Women’s IPL media rights
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced that
Viacom 18 have grabbed the media rights for the upcoming
Women’s IPL for Rs 951 crore for five years in the auction.

• The inaugural Women’s IPL is likely to begin in the first week of

March.

• Five teams will compete and all the matches will be held in
Mumbai.

• Viacom18 had won the IPL digital rights for Rs 23,758 crore while
Disney Star had retained the TV rights for Rs 23,575 crore for a
five-year period starting 2023

• There will be a total of 134 matches in the five-team WIPL over

five years, with 22 matches each in the first three years.

Last Nizam passes away
• The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mukarram Jah Bahadur passed
away in Turkey. T

• Two of the most renowned dynasties in the Muslim world were

connected to Mukarram Jah, also known by his title Nawab Mir
Barket Ali Khan Walashan Mukarram Jah Bahadur.

• With the pulls and demands emanating from the enormous family,
relatives, and entourage of servants, Mukarram Jah became
Nizam VIII following the inauguration ceremony on April 6, 1967,
much after the dominion was combined with India and only a few
scattered properties were left in the family.

• Only the Chowmahalla and Falaknuma are under the ownership of

the family;

• Sharad Yadav, former Union minister passed away

• Sharad Yadav founder-member of Bihar's ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U)

• He was a 7-time former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and had been elected thrice to
Rajya Sabha (1986, 2004, and 2014).

• He joined the Bharatiya Lok Dal (Lok Dal) in the 1970s and later became the National
General Secretary of the Lok Dal in 1979.

• He was first elected to the 5th Lok Sabha in the by-election held in 1974 from Jabalpur,
Madhya Pradesh he was re-elected from the same in 1977.

• He has been elected 4 times from Bihar's Madhepura (1991, 1996, 1999, and 2009).

• He served as the Chairman of the Janata Dal Parliamentary Board from 1989 to 1997
and was also the Union Minister for Textiles and Food Processing Industries from 1989
to 1990.

• He also served as the Union Minister for Civil Aviation (1999-2001), the Minister of
Labour (2001-2002) and the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution
(2002-2004).

• In 2018, Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar founded the Loktantrik Janata Dal with their
supporters.
