• Canara plans to sell its stake in Russian Joint

for about Rs 114 crore.

• SBI General Insurance has partnered with Doers NGO


to support the Himachal Pradesh police in reducing the
number of road accidents.

• As part of its CSR program, SBI General has provided


a well-equipped ambulance for immediate medical care
for road accident victims in the Mandi district

• SBI General has also collaborated with the Himachal


Pradesh Police to provide road signages to increase
awareness and caution in accident-prone areas on the
highway, with the goal of preventing road accidents.

• Asian Water Bird Census recently reported that the
number of birds in the Kole wetlands has reduced
significantly.

• Kole wetlands are located in Kerala. The

Wayanad becomes first district in country
to provide basic documents to all tribal
• Kerala‘s Wayanad becomes the first district in the country to
provide basic documents and facilities such as Aadhaar
cards, ration cards, birth/death certificates, election ID
cards, bank accounts and health insurance to all tribes
people.

• Apart from the basic documents, other services such as


income certificates, ownership certificates, age certificates,
and applications for new pensions are also provided at the
camps.

• The Wayanad district administration has attained the


meritorious achievement by providing 1,42,563 services to
as many as 64,670 tribal beneficiaries as part of the
Akshaya Big Campaign for Document Digitisation (ABCD)
campaign.

Foundation Day: January 21
• On January 21, 2023, the northeastern states Manipur, Meghalaya,
and Tripura celebrated their Statehood day.

• The government of India granted their statehood on January 21,


1972, under the North Eastern Region (Reorganization) Act, 1971.

• By 1949, the Indian Government signed a merger agreement with


Maharaja of Manipur. From 1949 to 1972, Tripura remained a Union
Territory. It received statehood in 1972.

• Meghalaya comprises three main regions called Khasi hills, the Garo
hills, and the Jaintia hills. The rulers of Garo and Khasi joined India in
1947.Later Meghalaya received its statehood in 1972.

• Tripura did not sign the Instrument of Accession initially. It merged


with India in 1949 and was made a Union Territory. Later it received
its statehood in 1972.

Jaipur Literature Festival
• The Jaipur Literature Festival is celebrated in the
month of January in the city of Jaipur.

• 16th edition of the festival is to be celebrated in 2023.


The festival was introduced in 2006 and is the largest
free literary festival in the world.

• Jaipur is rich in architecture. In 1876, the city was


completely painted pink upon the visit of Prince Albert.
Albert was Queen Victoria’s husband. The city was
painted pink to welcome him. Since then the city is
widely called the Pink city.

Rare ‘Orange Bat’ Spotted in
Kanger Valley National Park
• A rare orange-colored bat was spotted in the Banana
plantation in Parali Bodal village of Kanger Valley
National Park in Bastar, Chhattisgarh.

• The orange-colored bat is identified as a ‘Painted Bat’


and is characterized by bright orange and black wings.

• The scientific name of the bat is ‘Kerivoula Picta’

• The Kanger Valley National Park is derived from the


Kanger River. The park was established as a national
park in 1982.

Tata Boeing Aerospace Delivers First
Fuselage for Indian Army AH-64 Apache
• Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited has delivered
the first fuselage for six AH-64 Apache attack
helicopters ordered by the Indian Army from its
state-of-the-art facility in Hyderabad.

• TBAL, Boeing’s first equity joint venture in


India, is the result of a 2015 partnership
agreement with Tata Advanced Systems
Limited.

IIT-incubated firm develops BharOS
The Indigenous Operating System
• An IIT Madras-incubated firm has developed an
indigenous mobile operating system called BharOS

• The BharOS was developed by JandK Operations


Private Limited (JandKops), which has been incubated
by IIT Madras. The Foundation is funded by the
Department of Science and Technology under its
National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical
Systems

• BharOS provides access to trusted apps from


organisation-specific Private App Store Services.

Reports
• The United States Census Bureau World Population Clock
recently released its “World Population Review” report.

• According to the report, the world’s population (as of September


2022) was 7.9 billion. It is to reach 8 billion by November 2022. In
2015, the world population was 7.2 billion.

• India and China were the only countries with more than 1 billion
people.

• China is the most populous nation in the world with 1.42 billion
people.

• The population of India is 1.41 billion. India is to overtake China


and become the most populous nation in the world by 2030.

• Vatican City is the least populated country in the world with a


population count of 500 people.

• The population growth rate of the world is decreasing. It will


reach zero by 2080-2100. After 2100, the growth rate will be
negative.

• By 2100, the world population is to reach 10.4 billion people.

• World Population growth rate: 140 babies are born every


minute

• The growth rate fell below 1% in 2020. This occurrence is


the first since 1950.

• Global life expectancy has increased. It was 72.8 years in


2019. This is nine years longer than the expectancy in 1990.
The global expectancy is expected to increase and reach
77.2 years by 2050

• Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founder Dr Sanduk Ruit has won the ISA

• He is pioneer in delivering high-quality microsurgical procedures in remote

• Dr Ruit has trained more than 650 doctors, teaching them to cure
preventable blindness.

• The Government of Australia conferred on him “The Order of Australia” in


2007.

• In 2016, he was awarded the “Asian Game Changer Award” by the Asia
Society of New York.

• He is the recipient of the Padma Shri Award by the Govt of India

• The National Order of Merit of Bhutan as well as the Ramon Magsaysay


Award.

• External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has extended a


concessional USD 40 million Line of Credit for
developing sporting infrastructure in the Maldives.

• It is a part of New Delhi’s efforts to bring Prime Minister


Narendra Modi‘s flagship projects such as fit India and
Khelo India into the stretch of the Neighborhood First
Policy.

• Fit India and Khelo India were introduced by the Modi


government to revive sporting and fitness culture at the
grass root level in India.

UN General Assembly adopts Indian Co-sponsored
Resolution on ‘Education For Democracy
• The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution titled
‘Education for Democracy’ that reaffirms the right of everyone to
education.

• The resolution, which was co-sponsored by India, recognises that


“education for all” contributes to the strengthening of democracy.

• Earlier in 2015, a similar resolution was passed at the Assembly


encouraging all UN entities to use education to promote peace,
human rights, and democracy.

pipeline to begin supplying diesel
• The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline would begin
supplying diesel to Bangladesh on an experimental
basis in June of this year

• 5 kilometres of the pipeline are in Bangladesh, and 5


kilometres are in India, pre-commissioning of diesel
imports through this pipeline is already in progress

• The international pipeline will transport diesel from


Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation’s Parbatipur depot
to the Numaligarh Refinery Limited’s Siliguri-based
marketing terminal

115-years-old Branyas Morera becomes
the world’s oldest living person

• María Branyas Morera (USA/Spain) is now


confirmed as the world’s oldest woman living
and oldest person living, following the death of
118-year-old Lucile Randon (France).

• The organisation shared that the woman


named María Branyas Morera was born in
March 1907 in the US and presently resides in
Spain.

Norway Archaeologists find ‘World’s Oldest Runestone’

• Archaeologists in Norway have found the


oldest runestone in the world.

• The inscriptions are up to 2,000 years old

• The runestone, which measures 31 by 32


centimetres, has numerous inscriptions that
include runes and letters related to the
Germanic alphabet.

• Eight runes on the front of the stone read


“idiberug”.

becomes first LGBTQ woman of colour city council
• An Indian-American attorney, Janani Ramachandran has emerged as the
youngest and the first queer woman of colour to take oath as the Oakland
City Council member in the U.S. state of California.

• Ramachandran currently serves on the California Commission on Asian


and Pacific Islander American Affairs.

• Ramachandran has previously held the position of Commissioner at the


City of Oakland Public Ethics Commission in addition to her current
position on the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander
American Affairs. The graduate of Stanford University and the University
of California, Berkeley has held positions in a number of legal charities. As
a first-time candidate in her 2021 run for State Assembly, she shocked
political experts by advancing to the special election runoff, coming out on
top amongst a field of previously elected officials.

• LGBTQ is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and


transgender.

as Executive Director of UNEP
• United Nations General Assembly elected Inger Andersen of Denmark as
Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program for a
second, 4-year term beginning from 15th June 2023 to 14th June 2027.

• Inger Andersen started her career in Sudan in 1982 where she worked
initially as an English teacher under the UK-funded English teachers
programme.

• Inger Andersen led the International Union for Conservation of


Nature (IUCN) for 4 years before being named the head of UNEP
in June 2019.

Sobhagchand Shah Passes Away Obituary

• Padma Shri Awardee Prabhaben Sobhagchand Shah passed away

• Prabhaben Sobhagchand Shah was a social worker from the Union


Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman, and Diu.

• Prabhaben Sobhagchand Shah was also known as “Daman ki Divya”.

• She has organized canteens for the poor and coordinated the All India
Women Council’s “Vatta Banks” to assist Gujarat flood victims.

• In 2022, Prabhaben Sobhagchand Shah received the Padma Shri

• She was also elected to the defense committee in 1965 and 1971 during
the Indo-China war and Bangladesh Partition.

• She served on the Board of Directors of the Gujarat State Social Welfare
Advisory Board in Ahmedabad from 1992 to 1994. In 1998, she served as
a Dowry Prohibition officer and was later nominated to the District Legal
Advisory Committee of the Daman and Diu in 2001.

• David Crosby, the father of American folk-rock, has
passed away

• He was influential musical pioneer of the 1960s and


1970s who created a distinctly American brand of folk-
rock

• Crosby was a founder and focus of the Los Angeles


rock music community from which such performers as
the Eagles and Jackson Browne later emerged.

Assamese poet Nilamani Phukan passes away
• Renowned Assamese poet and recipient of Jnapith Award, Nilamani Phookan
has passed away.

• Phookan was one of the most celebrated poet of Assam and has been
awarded the country’s highest literary award, the 56th Jnanpith for the year
2021.

• The notable works of Phukan are ‘Xurjya Henu Naami Aahe Ei Nodiyedi’,
‘Kabita’, and ‘Gulapi Jamur Lagna’.

• He was awarded the 1981 Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese for his poetry
collection, Kavita (Kobita).

• He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1990 and
received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest literary honor in India,
given by Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters in 2002.

• He was selected as an ‘Emeritus Fellow’ for a period of two years by the


Cultural Department, Govt. of India in 1998.

• Assam Sahitya Sabha also conferred ‘Sahityacharya’ honour to him.
