Cylinder Cutout test for MBE

The Cylinder Cutout test continuously measures the engine torque. When the test is run, the injector for
the selected cylinder (manual test) or each of the cylinders in turn (automatic test) is disabled. This
causes the engine speed to decrease initially, but the engine will then compensate for the missing
cylinder and return to the correct idle speed. The change in engine torque while the cylinder is turned off
is a measure of the power loss - a small change in engine torque indicates a faulty cylinder, since turning
it off has little effect on the power.
When the test exits, all cylinders are turned back on automatically.
Note: Unlike the DDEC cylinder cutout test, which only makes an initial baseline measurement, the
MBE test checks the baseline torque before each cylinder is cutout. Because of this, the MBE
test will take longer to run than a DDEC cutout test.
Note: The results of the test should be evaluated by the relative torque value of each cylinder (not the
baseline value in the lower left of the window). A significantly lower value for a cylinder shows that
cylinder may have a problem.
Note: The torque is measured in the same manner for both automatic and manual tests.
Note: All cylinders are automatically turned back on when the dialog box is closed.
To test the engine by measuring its performance when you selectively cut out its cylinders:
1 Make sure the engine is on and idling.
2 Choose Cylinder Cutout from the Diagnostics menu to display the Cylinder Cutout dialog
box:
2 Click on the Automatic radio button if you want to run a test with each cylinder cut out in turn.
or
Click on the Manual radio button if you want to run a test with one cylinder cut out. The Cylinder
radio buttons will be enabled

Click on a Cylinder radio button to choose which cylinder to test.

3 Press Run Test - see below for some examples.
4 To print the data in the Cylinder Cutout dialog box, press Print.
The Print dialog box will be displayed so that you can choose how to print the data. This dialog
box is also displayed when you choose Print from the File menu.

After the test has been run, the Cylinder Cutout dialog box will show the results, for example:
The results next to each cylinder show the change in torque when that cylinder cuts out. In the example
above, the figures are similar for each cylinder, showing that all cylinders are working correctly. In the
example below, the torque deviation for cylinder #1 is much less than the figures for the other cylinders
indicating a potential problem with that cylinder.
