PROJECT TITLE:
FEDERATION OF UGANDA MEDICAL STUDENTS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Makerere University hosts the 17th general assembly for the Uganda medical students

February, 2022

Page 1
Background
The Federation of the Uganda Medical Students Association (FUMSA) is an association
that brings together all the medical students in the country through their respective
medical associations in the respective universities. It serves to provide a platform to
exchange scientific information, discuss health challenges that affect the country and how
to improve health education and improve on quality of health care in the country. It also
provides a link between the medical students and government, national and international
organizations.
A FUMSA general assembly is held annually, though it was last held 2 years back at
Mbarara University affected by COVID-19 pandemic. With the ease of the lock down,
Makerere University is going to host the 17th FUMSA general assembly scheduled for 15th
-18th April, 2022.
In line with the roles of FUMSA GA of improving health workforce in Uganda, a theme
of “Global Health during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: How healthcare
professional students can contribute”, has been deemed necessary in order to tackle the
challenges faced by our health system and the world at large as it has become a global
village with so much easier geographical access to the different regions.
Medical students all over the different teaching universities are key in managing patients
in their respective regional referral hospitals all over the country. There has been a great
impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, with currently Uganda having a target
of achieving 15 million persons vaccinated for COVID-19 by June, 2022, however, the
country has only achieved 6 million persons.
We therefore seek to conduct the FUMSA GA which intend to address disease outbreaks
detection, case management during a pandemic, anti-microbial resistance during the
pandemic, emerging medical technologies, the changing health system and a vaccination
uptake awareness campaign, so as to improve health service delivery, equity in health
during and after the pandemic in the country and the World at large.

Until now we only have students subscriptions which is not to fund the event, However,
we believe there is need to bring together all medical students and their leaders in
Uganda, to tackle issues that will improve health and achieve equity in health for all
people in Uganda and the world at large during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are therefore, proposing an integrated conference, dinner and COVID-19 vaccine

uptake awareness, to address the issue. For such a project, more resources will be needed
than we can raise from our congregations.

We are aware of the excellent work that has been done by CDC Uganda in other places,
as the project we have in mind is similar to the kind of projects you work you support, we
are sending you this concept paper in the hope that you will be able to support our work.

We will be very grateful to partner with you and discuss further about the implementation
of this event as we move to becoming doctors and saving lives in the country and the
globe at large.
