COURSE DESCRIPTION: Modeling and simulation make a particular part of the world easier
to define, visualize and understand. Both require the identification of relevant aspects of a situation
in the real world and then the use of different types of models for different objectives and the
definition of the most suitable model parameters. This course teaches engineers to simulate models
for a wide range of applications using MATLAB – a high-level programming language and an
environment for numerical computation and visualization.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The aim of this course is to introduce students the modeling of
mechanical (translational and rotational) systems, electrical system, electro-mechanical system,
fluid system, thermal system and other interdisciplinary system, with conventional modeling
techniques including Lagrangian Formulation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate competency by being
able to:
1. Learning of fundamentals of Modelling and Simulation
2. Analyse methods for solving formal problems
3. Implement mathematical modelling of complex systems in MATLAB
4. Evaluate simulations using Simulink
5. Implement modelling and simulation in different fields of engineering and their
applications
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
Modeling and simulation (M&S) has been described as one of the key enabling technologies of
the 21st century. Modeling and simulation is a dynamic field that is utilized in engineering, science,
health science, business, education, and many other disciplines. Due to its dynamic nature, the
modeling and simulation (M & S) field has tremendous potential for creating student interest in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Content includes, but is
not limited to geospatial technologies (i.e. GPS, GIS, remote sensing), gaming, medical and
scientific imaging, animation, engineering drawing, transportation, distribution, warehousing, and
architectural drawing.
