PRACTICAL NO.

Aim: Installation of Linux operating system (RedHat / Ubuntu) on virtual

machine.

Steps to Install Ubuntu 14.04 on Virtual Box:

1. Double click VirtualBox to open it.

2. Click on New / Machine tab-> New. New window will open. In this window

provide ‘Name’ for your virtual machine, and select the type and version for

the operating system (Linux and Ubuntu(32 bit)). Click ‘Next’.

3. In this step we select RAM for virtual machine. How much RAM must be

selected depends on which OS we are installing, for Ubuntu 32 bit – 2GB is

sufficient. Use the slider to select the RAM and click ‘Next’.

4. In this step we select Hard Disk for Virtual machine. Select ‘Create Virtual

Hard Disk Now’ option. Click ‘Create’ button.

5. Select ‘VDI- Virtual Box Disk Image’ as Hard Disk file type. Click ‘Next’.

6. In this step we decide Storage on physical hard disk. i.e. whether the new

virtual hard disk file should grow as it is used (dynamically allocated) or it

should be created at its maximum size (Fixed Size). Choose ‘Dynamically

allocated’ and click ‘Next’.

7. Now select File location and size for the Virtual Hard Disk. We will keep the

default location. And using Slider select the size of hard disk as 8GB. Click

on ‘Create’ button.

8. Now Virtual Machine is created- In VirtualBox window you will be able to

see the VM with Name you had given ‘Ubuntu2’ in our case. Select it (Blue

background when selected) and click on Settings. A Settings window will

open.

9. In the Settings window – Click on System Tab. Unselect the check box

‘Floppy’ in Boot order. Now Click on Down Arrow Button twice. The Boot

order should be – Optical, Hard Disk.

10.Now Go to Storage Tab-> Click on ‘Controller: IDE’ -> Click on ‘Empty’.

Now on right hand side In Attributes section – Besides ‘Optical Drive’ you

will be able to see a ‘CD’ image in blue color, click on it. Some options will

be displayed – Select ‘Choose Virtual Optical Disk File’. Now a file browser

window will open -> Go to the location where you have saved the ‘iso’ file

for Ubuntu, Select it and click ‘open’.

11.Now go to Network tab- We will use ‘NAT’. But if it does not work you can

select other suitable option from this box.

12.Now Click on ‘Ok’ button all the changes in settings will be saved. Now close

the settings box. And Click on Start Button to Power on the virtual machine.

It will take some time and then operating system installation will begin.

13.In the First screen that will appear Select Language ‘English’, Click on ‘Install

Ubuntu’. In next window it will show Preparing to install Ubuntu, Make sure

all requirements are present and click ‘Continue’ button.

14.Under ‘Installation type’ Select  Erase disk and install Ubuntu. (Note that

this will not delete anything from your original hard drive, this action is

performed on your virtual hard drive created earlier. ) Click ‘Install Now’.

15.In ‘Where are you?’ Window select your location from Dropdown box-

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Click ‘Continue’.

16.In ‘Keyboard Layout’ Select ‘English (US)’. Click ‘Continue’.

17.In ‘Who are you?’ window fill following information carefully- Your Name,

One you enter your name- Your Computer’s Name and User Name is

automatically filled. Enter password in ‘Choose a password’ box and enter in

again in ‘Confirm your password’ box. Make sure to remember this password.

Select ‘Require my password to log in’. Click on ‘Continue’.

18.Installation will begin. This takes around 10-20 mins.

19.Once the installation is complete- Installation Complete box will open. Click

on ‘Restart Now’.

20.Now a black screen will appear with some messages, Press ‘Enter’ key.

21.The system will restart and login page will appear, Enter password and click

enter.

22.The window of Ubuntu appears of small size to make it screen wide follow

the following steps.

23.Go to devices tab-> Click on Insert Guest Additions CD image.

24.Next the box will appear asking you if you wish to run this and do you trust it

click on ‘Run’.

25.Next the Authenticate box will appear- Enter your password here and click

‘Authenticate’ button.

26.Installation will take few mins. You will be able to see what is getting installed

on the screen.

27.Once the installation is complete- ‘Press Return to close this window’ message

will be seen as the last line on window. Now click ‘Enter’ key. Window will

close.

28.For the newly downloaded packages to take effect shout down the computer.

For this See the round button on right top corner- Click it -> Select last option

‘Shut down’. System will shut down.

29.Close the virtual box window- In the message box select- Power off the

machine.

30.You can start the machine again by selecting the machine and clicking on

‘Start’ button. Now the full screen view will be available.
