What is a Single user OS?

• A single user operating system has a single CPU and set of input and output devices
• It supports only 1 user at a time and only a particular job or program is loaded in the
memory for execution
• The most popular single user operating system is MS-DOS.
• It is further categorised as-Single-user, Single-task and Single-user, Multi-tasking.
Single – User, Single – Task
• This operating system is designed to
manage the computer so that one user
can effectively do one thing at a time.
• MS-DOS is a single-user single-task
operating system.
• The desktop computer/personal
computer computer is a good example
which uses the modern single-user
single-task operating system.
Single-user, Multi-tasking
• This is the most commonly used OS used by
most people on their desktop and laptop.
Microsoft's Windows and Apple's MacOS are
examples of this type of OS.
• An operating system that allows a single user to
perform more than one task at a time is called
Single-User Multitasking Operating System.
Multi – User Operating System
• It allows more than one user to interact with
the computer at a time and each user works
on a different set of programs and data.
• The programs and data of more than
one user are loaded into the memory and
processed by the operating system. There is
a central computer that acts as a server and
all other computers are connected to
the server with the help of terminals.
