WHAT IS OS

• An operating system is a software program that act as an interface

between the computer user and computer hardware and controls
the execution of programs.

• It is the operating system that eliminates the need to know coding

language to interact with computing devices.
HOW OS WORKS
The User interfaces with the system or application
software.

The system or application software interfaces operating

system.

The operating system interfaces with the hardware.

Each of them interfaces are two ways transactions with
each sending and receiving data
USES OF OS

• The operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the
computer. It performs basic tasks such as file, memory and process
management, handling input and output, and controlling peripheral devices
such as disk drives and printers.

• Everyone can use the computer without know about the programming
languages.
HISTROY OF OS

The first operating system were developed in the 1950s, when computers could only run one
program at a time.

In the late 1960s, the first version of Unix operating system was developed. Written in
programming language C, available for free.

Microsoft windows was developed in response to an IBM request for an operating system to
run its range of personal computers or PCs.
HISTROY OF OS

• The first operating system created by Microsoft was not called

Windows, it was called MS-DOS and it was built in 1981 when it
bought the 86-DOS operating system from Seattle Computer Products
and modified it to meet IBM requirements.

• The Windows name was first used in 1985 when a graphical user
interface was created and paired or joined with the MS-DOS.

COMMON FEATURES

• Process Management
• Security Management
• Storage and Memory Management
• Disk Management
• I/O Operation
• Device Management
• Loading and Executing
TYPES OF OS

• Single and multi-tasking

• Single user and multi user
• Distributed
• Templated
• Embedded
• Real-time
SINGLE AND MULTI-TASKING

• A single tasking operating system can only run one program at a time while
multi tasking operating system allows more than one program to be running
in concurrency.
• Example:
• Single tasking operating system is MS DOS
• Multi tasking operating system is UNIX
SINGLE USER AND MULTI USER

• A single user OS is a system in which only one user can access the system at a
time.
• On the other hand a multi user OS allows more than one user to access computer
system at one time.
• Example:
• Single user operating system is PALM OS
• Multi user operating system is MAC OS
DISTRIBUTED

• Distributed computations are carried out on more than one machine.

• When computers in a group work in cooperation, they form a distributed
system.
• Example:
• Office
TEMPLATED

• Templating refers to creating a single virtual machine image as a guest

operating system,
• Then saving it as a tool for multiple running virtual machines.
• Example:
• Use in cloud computing
EMBEDDED

• They are designed to operate on small machine like ATMs with less
autonomy.
• They are able to operate with a limited number of resources.
• They are very compact and extremely efficient by design.
• Example:
• Household appliance
• ATM
REAL-TIME

• A real time OS is an operating system that guarantees to process events or

date by a specific moment in time.

• Example:
• Hospital equipments
