Musical Instruments of Africa
Idiophones

gong, or rattle
Bafalon - xylophone made from logs or bamboo

- single or multiple bells; has the highest pitch

Atingting kon - split gongs made of wood with slit opening at the bottom
Djembe - shaped like goblet; carved from hollow trunk covered with goat skin

Membranophones
- instruments which have vibrating animal membranes used in drums
Body Percussion
- hand claps, thigh slaps, upper arm or chest pounds, feet stomps
Talking Drum - used to send messages

- a set of plucked tongues or keys mounted on a sound board
Mbira - thumb piano or finger xylophone made of wooden board with attached metal lines of graduated
sizes

- any class of musical instruments in which a stretched, vibrating string produces the initial sound
Musical Bow - ancestor of all string instruments

Lute
- modern guitar with resonating body, a neck and one string across its body and neck and one string

Kora - most sophisticated harp of Africa
