Science Fair Participation Guide for Parents

The middle school students will be participating in a science fair that encourages them to think like scientists by designing a science project using the scientific method to solve a problem. Students will receive instructions and handouts in class and complete most of the work at home by given due dates to develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving. Parents are asked to encourage and monitor their student's progress but not be too involved to ensure equity and promote student learning, letting the final project reflect the student's individual effort and design.

Dear Parents,

The middle school students will be taking part in a science fair, an exciting event that
encourages students to think like young scientists. During the next few months your
student will be designing a science project that uses the scientific method to solve a
problem. We hope you agree that the educational benefits are numerous, as students
develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving.

Each student will be given instructions and handouts during class for the various steps of
his or her project. Most of the work will be completed at home, and students will receive
a calendar noting due dates for each part of the project.

We ask that you encourage your student and monitor his or her progress along the way.
Your support is critical to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement
to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning! It is
important that your student wrestle with problems and try to solve them. Guide your
student whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your student’s
individual effort and design.

If you have any questions along the way, please contact your student’s science teacher.

Sincerely,

The Science Department
