Prose
A form of written or spoken language that does
not follow a structure of rhyming or meter.
Follows a grammatical structure using words
to compose phrases that are arranged into
sentences and paragraphs.
It has four types: nonfiction, fiction, heroic,
poetic
Folk Narrative
May be any story based on real or fiction events in the past
told among the people in a cultural group or community.
Reflects the beliefs, traditions, and culture of our people
There are 3 types of folk narrative; Myth, Legend, Folktales
TYPES OF FOLK NARRATIVE:
Myth
Refers to a story that explains the origin of the world
and its first inhabitants.
Typically associated with theology and ritual.
Features supernatural beings, spirits and human
beings as characters.

TYPES OF FOLK NARRATIVE:
Legend
A narrative that that is used to explain an event,
transmit a lesson, or simply entertain an audience.
Explains the origins of things in the world.
It is passed down from one generation to the next.
May be classified into the following based on subject
matter: heroic and historical, religious, supernatural,
toponymic.
EXAMPLE OF
Legend
Folktales
Refers to the narratives that are commonly passed
down orally.
Covers the ancient folk literature of the Philippines’
various ethnic groups, as well as various pieces of
folklore based on superstition and beliefs.
It typically involves moral story or lesson
Classified into animal tales or fables, magic tales,
humorous tales, novelistic tales, religious and
didactic tales.

Formal
Uses formal or academic language with proper
grammar and punctuation
Discusses crucial topics based on research in a
serious manner.
Factual and require evidence from credible sources.

Formal Essay
WRITING STYLES OF ESSAY:
Informal
Enables the writer to express his or her experiences,
insights, and observation in a creative manner.
Doesn’t involve much grammar and punctuation
and is more personally based.
Mostly subjective because it is usually written based
on personal opinions and thoughts.
Novel
Are narratives of considerable length and a certain complexity
that deals imaginatively with human experience.
It is a connected sequence of events involving a group of
persons in a specific setting.
Has fictional or semi-fictional contents.
It can incorporate genres such as gothic, thriller, mystery, cult
and etc.
There are four types of novel: didactic, romantic, realist, radical
TYPES OF NOVEL:
Didactic tradition - guide people in their faith or
religion
Romantic tradition - pattern stories from metrical
romances.
Realist tradition - focuses on describing
experiences of person or people as social structures
and forces that affect them.
Radical tradition - promotes change in the social
and political system.
