SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED

DISEASES (STDs)
INTRODUCTION
What causes STDs?
Bacteria and viruses that grow in warm, moist
places in the body cause STDs. They are passed
from one person to another through sex.
Infections can spread from the penis, vagina,
mouth or anus. These infections can be minor or
they can be very painful, even life threatening.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — are generally
acquired by sexual contact. The bacteria, viruses or parasites
that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person
to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids.
Sometimes these infections can be transmitted nonsexually,
such as from mothers to their infants during pregnancy or
childbirth, or through blood transfusions or shared needles.

What are the most common types of STIs/STDs?And how are they
treated?
Chlamydia
Gonorrhea
Syphilis
Genital Herpes
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
Hepatitis B (HBV)
Genital Warts (HPV)
Trichomoniasis
01 ABOUT THE DISEASE
WHAT IS/ARE THE FEMALE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES?
❏ CHLAMYDIA
The bacteria are usually spread through sex or
contact with infected genital fluids (semen or
vaginal fluid). You can get chlamydia through:
unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. sharing sex
toys that are not washed or covered with a new
condom each time they're used.

❏ GONORRHEA
a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by
infection with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium.
❏ SYPHILIS
a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause
serious health problems without treatment. Infection
develops in stages (primary, secondary, latent, and
tertiary).

❏ GENITAL HERPES
a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The herpes
simplex virus (HSV) causes genital herpes. Genital herpes
can often be spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual
activity.
❏ HEPATITIS B (HPB)
a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis
B virus (HBV).
01 ABOUT THE DISEASE
WHAT IS/ARE THE FEMALE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES?
❏ ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)
a virus that attacks the body's immune system. If HIV is not
treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency
syndrome).
❏ GENITAL WARTS (HPV)
are a type of sexually transmitted infection (STI) that causes
warts (small bumps or growths) to form in and around your
genitals and rectum. Certain strains of human papillomavirus
(HPV) cause genital warts. While there’s no cure for HPV itself,
you can receive treatment for genital warts.

❏ TRICHOMONIASIS
is a common sexually transmitted infection
caused by a parasite. In women, trichomoniasis
can cause a foul-smelling vaginal discharge,
genital itching and painful urination.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS?
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
CHLAMYDIA
-SYMPTOMS-
● At least 70% of women with chlamydia don't notice any symptoms.
If they do get symptoms, the most common include:
-pain when urinating
-unusual vaginal discharge
-pain in the tummy or pelvis
-pain during sex
-bleeding after sex
-bleeding between periods
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
CHLAMYDIA
-CAUSES-
● It is usually spread during sexual contact with someone who has the
infection. It can happen even if no one cums.
● The main ways people get chlamydia are from having vaginal sex and
anal sex, but it can also be spread through oral sex.
● Rarely, you can get chlamydia by touching your eye if you have
infected fluids on your hand.
● Chlamydia can also be spread to a baby during birth if the mother has
it.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GONORRHEA
-SYMPTOMS-
● In many cases, gonorrhea infection causes no symptoms. Symptoms,
however, can affect many sites in your body, but commonly appear in
the genital tract.
● Signs and symptoms of gonorrhea infection in women include:
-Increased vaginal discharge
-Painful urination
-Vaginal bleeding between periods, such as after vaginal intercourse
-Abdominal or pelvic pain
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GONORRHEA
-CAUSES-
● You get an infection when the bacteria that causes gonorrhea
(N. gonorrhoeae) when it enters your body through sexual
fluids, like semen or vaginal fluid — often through unprotected
sex.
● In people assigned female at birth, the most common site of
infection is the cervix. The cervix is the opening between your
vagina and your uterus.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
SYPHILIS
-SYMPTOMS-
● Syphilis symptoms in adults are divided into
stages.(Primary,Secondary and Latent and Late Stages)
● PRIMARY STAGE
-The first sign of syphilis is a small sore, called a chancre
(SHANG-kur). The sore appears at the spot where the bacteria
entered your body. While most people infected with syphilis develop
only one chancre, some people develop several of them.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
SYPHILIS
-SYMPTOMS-
● SECONDARY STAGES
-Within a few weeks of the original chancre healing, you may experience a rash
that begins on your trunk but eventually covers your entire body — even the palms of
your hands and the soles of your feet.
● LATENT AND LATE STAGE
-If you aren't treated for syphilis, the disease moves from the secondary stage
to the hidden (latent) stage, when you have no symptoms. The latent stage can last
for years. Signs and symptoms may never return, or the disease may progress to the
third (tertiary) stage.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
SYPHILIS
-CAUSES-
● Cause difficulty coordinating your muscle movements,
paralysis, numbness, blindness, and dementia (a steady
loss of mental ability severe enough to interfere with
daily living including hearing and memory loss).
● Cause heart disease and damage internal organs.
● Cause death.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GENITAL HERPES
-SYMPTOMS-
● Women who have the herpes virus may have no outbreaks or signs
of infection. Many do not know they have the virus.
● Once you are infected, the virus stays in your nerve cells for life.
● When the virus is not active, there is no sign of infection.
● When the virus becomes active, a herpes outbreak occurs.
● Some women may not have any outbreaks or may have only one
outbreak, while others may have multiple outbreaks.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GENITAL HERPES
-CAUSES-
● There are 2 herpes simplex viruses that can cause
infection.
-One causes most genital herpes.
-The other virus can also cause genital herpes but more
often causes blisters of the mouth and lips (e.g., cold sores
or fever blisters).
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
HEPATITIS B (HPB)
-SYMPTOMS-
● Symptoms of acute hepatitis B can include:
-Fever -Abdominal pain
-Fatigue -Dark urine
-Loss of appetite -Vomiting
-Nausea
-Clay-colored bowel movements
-Joint pain Jaundice (yellow color in the skin or the eyes)
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
HEPATITIS B (HPB)
-CAUSES-
● The virus is passed from person to person through blood,
semen or other body fluids. It does not spread by sneezing or
coughing.
● Hepatitis B infection is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV).
● It can also caused by sexual contract, sharing of
needles, accidental needles sticks and mother to child.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)
-SYMPTOMS-
● Many people have no symptoms when they first become infected with HIV.
● As the immune system worsens, a variety of complications start to occur.
● For many people, the first signs of infection are large lymph nodes or “swollen
glands” that may be enlarged for more than three months.
● Other symptoms often experienced months to years before the onset of AIDS
include:
-lack of energy or fatigue -short-term memory loss
-frequent yeast infections (in the mouth) -weight loss
-frequent low-grade fevers and night sweats
-skin rashes or flaky skin that is hard to heal
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)
-CAUSES-
● The most common way that women get HIV is through sex with a
male partner who has HIV.
● Several factors can increase the risk of HIV in women. For
example, during vaginal or anal sex, a woman has a greater risk
for getting HIV because, in general, receptive sex is riskier than
insertive sex.
● Sharing injection drug equipment (works), such as needles, with a
person who has HIV.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GENITAL WARTS (HPV)
-SYMPTOMS-
● Depending on the type of HPV a female has, they will present with different
symptoms.
● High risk HPV usually presents with no initial symptoms.
● Some symptoms of advanced cervical cancer include:
-unusual bleeding, such as after sex
-pain in the pelvic region
-unusual discharge from the vagina
-pain during sex
● You may notice lumps or growths around your vagina that were not there before.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
GENITAL WARTS (HPV)
-CAUSES-
● Certain other types of HPV can lead to precancerous
changes in the cervix, or to cervical cancer.
● These are called high-risk types of HPV.
● They can also lead to vaginal or vulvar cancer, anal
cancer, and throat or mouth cancer.
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
TRICHOMONIASIS
-SYMPTOMS-
● About 70% of people with the infection do not have any signs or symptoms.
● When trich does cause symptoms, they can range from mild irritation to severe
inflammation.
● Some people get symptoms within 5 to 28 days after getting the infection.
● Women with trich may notice:
-itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals;
-a clear, white, yellowish, or greenish vaginal discharge (i.e., thin
discharge or increased volume) with a fishy smell.
-discomfort when peeing
02 SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS??
TRICHOMONIASIS
-CAUSES-
● caused by a one-celled protozoan, a type of tiny parasite called
Trichomonas vaginalis.
● The parasite passes between people during genital contact,
including vaginal, oral or anal sex.
● In women, this includes the outer part of the genitals (vulva),
vagina, opening of the uterus (cervix) and the urinary opening
(urethra).
