    The narrator and his valet stayed in a room in a castle that was more expensive-looking than the other rooms. The room was oddly designed to accommodate many paintings on the walls. The narrator became engrossed in a small book he found in the room and did not leave the bed. He had difficulty sleeping because he was intrigued by a portrait of a beautiful 18-year-old bride. The portrait was of the bride of a painter who was older than her. The painter had asked to paint his bride, though she disliked the idea, and painted her for many nights and days in the same room until she became depressed, ailing and died, just as the painting was finished.
