The Structure of the earth

Plate movement

The magma in the mantle is heated which cause it to move in a circular fashion forming convection
currents of magma. This causes the plates on top to move. As the plates move, the continents and
oceans of the world change position. This is known as continental drift. Some plates are separating
from each other, while some are colliding with each other.

Seperating plates – feature Mid Ocean Ridge

The American Plate seperates from the Eurasian plate as they are carried along by the convection
currents of magma. A gap appears between the two plates and magma rises and fills the gap
between the plates. The cold sea water cools and hardens the magma. This process continues and
the Mid Atlantic Ridge is formed, which is a winding chain of mountains on the ocean floor.

Colliding plates – features – Volcanoes, earthquakes, fold mountains

The Nasca plate ( oceanic plate) collides with the American plate. The plates come together as they
are carried by the circulation of magma. The heavier oceanic plate sinks, but at the point of sinking
pressure builds up between the plates and is released by an earthquake. The sinking crust melts and
rejoins the circulation of magma creating pressure that is released this time as a volcanic eruption.
The continental plate is buckled and folded upwards to form fold mountains.
