Reflective Essay

As a student of Medical Laboratory Technology, I have recently completed the course

of clinical parasitology. The subject was vast, interesting, and engaging, with the credit going to
my teacher, Dr. Asadullah Abid. He was an excellent educator who knew how to make the topics
interesting and engaging for the class. His approach allowed every student to participate equally
in the lecture and helped us to understand the subject matter more effectively.
In this course, I learned about the basic terminologies of
parasitology, including the life cycle of parasites, their transmission, prevention, and treatment.
The knowledge I gained in this course will help me both in my field and daily life. The diagnostic
techniques of parasitic diseases will definitely help me in my field. I learned about various
techniques for the examination of feces, such as the sedimentation and floating technique,
McMaster technique and Stoll's method for counting eggs. I was able to understand the advantages
and disadvantages of each method and the situations in which they are best used. The preparation
of Blood smears was another interesting topic. I learned about the different types of smears,
including Thin, Thick, and Direct Mount, and the importance of staining techniques in the
identification of parasites in blood specimens. I also learned about the identification of Mosquitoes
and Mosquito larvae, which was essential in understanding the role of mosquitoes in the
transmission of parasitic infections. The study of Arachnids (ticks) structure was also informative
in understanding their role in the transmission of diseases.
I didn’t only learn skill but I also learned a lot about
myself as well. The process of preparing slides, staining and examining them under the microscope
was time consuming and often required a great deal of patience and diligence. This experience
enhances my thinking abilities and heightened my attention to detail, both of which I anticipate
will be beneficial I my future professional endeavors.
Overall, my experience with clinical parasitology was a challenging but appreciable. I am
grateful for the opportunity to learn about this subject and am excited to apply what I have learned
in my future medical laboratory technology career. I would suggest that future courses in this
subject focus more on hands-on laboratory work with strict adherence to procedures as this would
help students better understand the techniques involved.
In conclusion, I would really appreciate Dr. Asadullah Abid for his hard
work and dedication to teaching. I am confident that the knowledge I have acquired will be
invaluable in my future endeavors. I believe that my experience with this subject was exactly what
I needed to grow as a person and as a future medical laboratory technologist. I would like to wish
Dr. Asadullah Abid success in his life and career, and may Allah bless him.
