According to Merriam-Webster dictionary,
DISCRIMINATION or the so-called, Prejudice is an injury
from some judgement or action of another in disregard of
one’s rights. In other words, it is an unfavorable opinion or feeling with
senseless thought or reason. It simply means to pre-judge others.

Discrimination can have a strong influence on how people behave and
interact with others, particularly with those who are different from them.
Discrimination is a baseless and usually negative attitude toward member of a
group.

Hey, I’m an advocate of
friendship for world peace,
and I don’t want these to

There are various forms of discrimination that most of the people have been
facing. Here are some of the few and common ones:

Age Discrimination: This happens when someone is treated unfavorably
against you or bullies you because of their age. This also happens when a
requirement, condition or practice is imposed that disadvantages a person or
group because of their age, and is not reasonable.

Disability Discrimination: It is when a person with disability is treated
favorably than a person, without the disability in the same or similar
circumstances.
Gender Discrimination: It is also known as sexual discrimination, is
any action that specifically denies opportunities, privileges, or rewards to a person (or a group)
because of gender.

Political Belief/Affiliation Discrimination: This happens when a person ( or a group) is
treated unfavorably through bashing especially in social media because your political thoughts and
ideas don’t go along with the majority. This kind of prejudice is so common in the Philippines.

Race/Racial Discrimination: is any discrimination against individuals on the basis of their skin
color, or racial or ethnic origin.

Activity 3. Reading Activity

Instruction: Read and comprehend the article below about the recent issue of
America on George Floyd’s death and answer the questions that follow.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46 year-old black man, was killed in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.
Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost nine
minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down, begging for his life and
repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe”. A second and third officer further

restrained Floyd while a fourth prevented bystanders from intervening. During

the final three minutes Floyd was motionless and had no pulse while Chauvin

ignored onlookers’ pleas to remove his knee, which he did not do until medics

told him to.

The following day, after videos made by witnesses and security cameras became
public, all four officers were fired. Two autopsies found Floyd’s death to be homicide. Chauvin was initially
charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, to which was later added second-
degree murder; the three other officers were charged with aiding and
abetting second-degree murder.

Floyd’s death triggered demonstrations and protests in many U.S. cities
and around the world against police brutality, police racism and lack of
police accountability. In early June, The Minneapolis City Council took
action to require police officers and to intervene against the use of
excessive force by other officers, and voted an intent to replace the police
department with a new community-based system of public safety. “ The
Minneapolis Police Chief canceled contract negotiations with the police
union and announced plans to bring in outside experts to examine how
the union contract can be restricted to provide transparency and flexibility
for true reform.

Discrimination is a very serious problem in our society.
This problem is common to school children and even to
teenagers. This has to be taken seriously in our

community and in schools for this doesn’t give any

benefit to people, instead, it gives different negative

effects to the people who are affected.

As a student, you can make a small change - through giving

some resolution to the problem of discrimination. We have

to analyze better if the things we do to the people around
us could hurt them or not.
If you think you they are different, understand better their
difference. Remember that to make the world a better place
is to spread love and friendship. That’s the advocacy of this
