1.

Explain How does Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS)

work?

The MCAS works by aiding the 737 MAX  to embellish the aircraft’s handling
characteristics and decrease the tendency to pitch up at elevated angles of attack. The
system is designed to assist pilots in preventing mid-flight stall by initiating automatic
nose-down movement. Furthermore, the MCAS receives information from one of the
sensors on the 737 MAX, which instructs it when to activate. Despite the fact that the
737 has several AOA sensors, Boeing designed MCAS to use just one of them.

2. How did the design and engineering of the Boeing 737 MAX planes differ from
previous Boeing models, and what impact did these differences have on the
planes' performance and safety?

The Boeing 737 MAX differs from the previous Boeing models in terms of its
design and engineering since it now employs a larger and heavier engine. Hence, this
gives the aircraft notable improvements such as making it more fuel efficient. These
modifications, however, had an effect on the plane's safety because of the larger
engine,  it was more prone to pitching up at high angles of attack. This is due to the fact
that the heavier engines resulted in a difference in the center of gravity of the aircraft
which is crucial in a safe flight. As a result, the MCAS system was implemented in order
to compensate for this. Thus, it works by forcing the plane to push the nose back down if
it experiences a nose up tendency.

3. What are the two accidents involving the MCAS problem of Being 737 max?

The two accidents involving the MCAS problem of Boeing 737 MAX are the passenger
airliner involving Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29,2018, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight
302 on March 10, 2019. These two tragedies took over 350 lives of crews and
passengers.

4. What were the key findings of the investigation into the accidents, and how did
these findings inform changes to the Boeing 737 MAX planes?

The key findings of the investigations show that the cause of the accidents were
mainly because of the Maneuvering Characteristic Augmentation System (MCAS), the
faulty flight sensors, and the lack of information and training of the pilot with regards to
the MCAS.

5. What factors contributed to the decision to develop the 737 MAX, and how did
Boeing's competitive position in the market influence this decision?
Based on the documentary that I have watched, there are several factors that contributed to the
development of the 737 MAX. Among these was the increasing demand for fuel-efficient aircraft,
prompted by rising fuel prices. Another thing is the pressure from its European rival — Airbus,
which launched its new A320neo with promising features such as improved fuel efficiency,
range, and passenger capacity.

6. How many Angle of Attack sensors does 737 max have?

The Boeing 737 MAX has two angle of attack sensors. However, the MCAS only uses
one to get its input. Hence, if this fails then the MCAS system will be greatly affected.

Explain how these key factors influence the crashes of the Boeing 737 MAX planes, as
presented in the documentary.
