Airplanes. It is the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, a family of twin-engine, single-aisle
aircraft. The 737 MAX was developed to compete with the Airbus A320neo family. It was
announced on August 30, 2011, and made its maiden flight on January 29, 2016. The 737
MAX was certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in March 2017.
The 737 MAX was involved in two fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019, which led to the
grounding of the aircraft for nearly two years. The accidents were caused by a software flaw
known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), which could
incorrectly push the nose of the aircraft down, causing it to crash. Boeing has since
redesigned the MCAS and implemented additional safety measures. The 737 MAX was
recertified by the FAA in November 2020.
Current Status
The 737 MAX is now flying with airlines around the world. It is a popular choice for airlines
due to its fuel efficiency and range. Boeing has delivered over 1,300 737 MAX aircraft to
airlines as of October 2023.
