ACADEMIC WRITING.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACADEMIC WRITING FROM LITERARY WRITING.
 What is a
ACADEMIC WRITING?
A formal style of writing used in universities and
scholarly publications. You'll encounter it in journal
articles and books on academic topics, and you'll
be expected to write your essays, research papers,
and dissertation in academic style.
 FEATURES OF
ACADEMIC WRITING
 COMPLEXITY
Academic writing tends to be more complicated
and has longer words. The texts becomes more
difficult to comprehend in terms of subject matter,
language, arrangement of words and grammar.
 COMPLEX
Catholicism was introduced to
the Philippines during Spanish
control, with missionaries
establishing churches, schools,
hospitals, and universities,
displacing the formerly dominant
Hindu, Islamic, and Buddhist
faiths.
SIMPLE
Catholicism was brought by
the Spaniards in the
Philippines. They built
churches, schools, hospitals,
and universities. In which
Catholicism replaced Hindu,
Islamic, and Buddhists.

 FORMALITY
In academic writing, more formal words and
phrases are used. This means that in an essay you
should avoid colloquial words and expressions.

COLLOQUIAL WORDS
Cuz - because
Wanna - want to
Y'all - you all
What's up? - How are you?
Don't - Do not
They're - They are
 Informal:
We considered that performance to be an
epic fail.

Formal:
We considered that performance to be a
complete failure.
 Informal:
Alex's books are written superb!

Formal:
Alex's books are well-written.

 ACCURACY
It is necessary to use accurate terminologies in
academic writing. You will be using a lot of
technical language, so make sure you are not
using the improper words and phrases.

CAPITAL, CASH, AND CURRENCY

I have sufficient capital to put up a business.
I paid the groceries in cash.
A new currency has been introduced in the
foreign exchange market.

 OBJECTIVITY
Being objective means that you are concerned
with facts rather than personal feelings or biases.
Being fair in your work is a part of being objective.

Don't write: "In my opinion, this would be

a very interesting topic."

Write: "This would be a very

interesting topic."

 PRECISION
You need to be specific especially in dealing with
facts, figures, and dates. Inappropriate word
combinations, such as "someone said" or "a lot of
people," are not acceptable academic writing
expressions.

Don't write: : There were many people

died in an ambush.

Write: : There were 15 people died

in an ambush.
