for
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
(PA 210)

Course Description:

The course will deal primarily with the management of the most important resources of the organization, human
resources, and how they contribute to the achievement of organizational the goals and function towards fuller
maximization and development of their potentials. This course shall also consider the emerging issues, problems,
techniques and practices in personnel planning and procurement, compensation, rewards and benefits, training and
development, and management and labor relations, consistent with the total person approach to human resources
development.

Course Objectives:

General:

The course, in general, aims to equip the graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the concepts,
trends, principles, systems, applications and processes involved in the science and art of managing human resources.

It aims further at developing a strong appreciation on the importance of effectively managing and developing the
human resource, the most valuable of resources in any given business or private establishment.

Specific:

At the end of the semester, the graduate students are expected to be able to:

1. Assess and compare the difference and similarity between human resource management and human resource
development;
2. Define and illustrate human resource management as an art and as a science;
3. Discuss and illustrate the functions, dynamics and importance of human resource management and how
properly formulated human resource policies and procedures contribute to effective human resource
management and development;
4. Design and develop simple human resource assessment and development tools for training and performance
supervision and evaluation applicable to their company or a specific client-group;
5. Acknowledge and inquire into the current vs. contemporary perspectives, trends and issues on the field of
Human Resource Management and Development in the private companies and corporate setting; and,
6. Describe and summarize basic principles in formulating human resource policies, managing compensation
and benefit programs, personnel movement, and governing settlement of disputes arising from issues related
to discipline, complaints and grievances of employees.

Introduction: The Art and Science of Human Resource Management (1.5 hours)

Chapter 2: Human Resource Planning and Procurement (4 hours)


1. Organization and Management of Jobs

Chapter 3: Human Resource Development & Manpower Training (6 hours)


1. The Nature, Philosophy and Objectives of Human Resource Development and Manpower Training

3. Training Evaluation and Feedback*
4. Performance Management and Standards*
5. Performance Appraisal System*
6. Diagnosing, Coaching and Improving Performance *

Chapter 4: Human Resource Maintenance & Conservation (8 hours)
