Answer all questions and show all working.

1. Using Operational Amplifiers and simple R C filters design a 3-band filter circuit to turn on
LEDs when specific frequency ranges are present in an input 4 volt (peak) audio signal. The
Frequency ranges and corresponding LED are shown in the block diagram of Fig 1. A Red
LED must be turned on ONLY when frequencies up to 300 Hz are present in the input audio.
A green LED must be turned on ONLY when within the range of 400 Hz to 3 kHz are
present in the input audio, and a Blue LED must be turned on ONLY when frequencies at 4
kHz and above are present in the input audio.

Other Design conditions:

a) The OP Amps are powered from a + 12V and -12V power supply.
b) The voltage drop across the LEDs are shown in the Table below.
c) Current limiting resistors must be placed in series with the LEDs to ensure that
approximately 10 mA flows through the LEDs when they are turn on.
d) Show how the values of all resistors and capacitors are determined.

2. FM and AM
a) Draw a labelled block diagram of the fundamental components of a FM
communication system designed for broadcast frequencies of 88 – 108 MHz.
b) Compare the modulation techniques of AM and FM stating the various advantages
and disadvantages
c) An AM transmitter if connected to a 50 Ω antenna and has a power spectrum shown
in Fig. 5.1, determine the following:
i. The modulating frequency
ii. The peak voltage value of the modulated signal
iii. The bandwidth
b. Standard broadcast FM has a maximum permitted frequency deviation of 75 kHz and
modulation frequency of 15 kHz. For a broadcast FM modulator with a modulating
signal ei = Eisin(2π15kt) and an unmodulated carrier ec = 10sin(2π100kt), using the
Bessel table from your notes, answer the following:

i. Draw the frequency spectrum showing all frequencies and amplitudes.

ii. What is the bandwidth?
