Reading passage
Read the following passage about a haunted house.

Walking down the hill, Sally and her classmates came across a
small eerie cottage at the bottom of the hill. The cottage did not
look very spacious and it was very old and empty. Although the
main door was locked, all the windows were broken. Clearly, the
house had been taken good care of for some time and no one
was living there anymore. Sally remembered at once that the
empty house was the famous ‘haunted house’ on Fantasy Island.
She had read a story about the house on the Internet.

This cottage belonged to a wealthy woman about two hundred

years ago. She had many lands and lots of people worked for
her. Then one day, there was a strange disease on the island
and it killed many people. The wealthy woman and her family
suddenly disappeared from the island. Since then, the house has
been left empty and even now on one knows where the family
has gone. However, this house has now become a famous
attraction on the island, and people who are interested in ‘ghosts’
often visit this ‘haunted house’.
