encounter to see the inspiration and devotion of the representatives, staff, and
volunteers.

3. BACKGROUND OF THE KARACHI DOWN SYNDROME

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION:
The Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP), a non-profit organization, was launched
in March 2014 by a group of concerned parents and passionate individuals who due to

provide them with the opportunity to lead independence and fulfilling lives. KDSP
understands the need of individual with Down syndrome and their loved ones and so
from the moment a family with a child with Down syndrome is introduced to us, KDSP

4. OVERVIEW OF THE PEOPLE:

Our group went to the organization and there we met with many experienced people.
They were supportive to us explaining different task that they do in the organization.
They also shared with us about their experience that they got from working in the
organization for the last few years.
4.1 SENIOR MANAGER:
AREEBA REHMAN is the senior manager in KDSP. We were quite impressed by
meeting her. She had a very down-to-earth and humble personality; the way kids were
loving her and talking to her showed that she was very friendly with them. We had a
short conversation with her in which she told us about the current issues she has to face
regarding her employees. She told that nowadays employees don’t have consistency in
their jobs meaning high TURN OVER rate. Employees don’t feel valued and supported
as an individual. Dealing with children isn’t an easy task therefore employees become
stressed out and she has to deal with employee’s physical health as well. Also
according to them they are being given low wages. Keeping in mind these problems she
makes sure that a right person is hired for a right job. She makes them feel that they are
their assets and Irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, and religion they are being
valued. She works on communication gap between her employees. She also told us
about redesigning of employees tasks, giving independence to them in their work and

4
providing them with proper feedback with bonuses and rewards they deserve. She
believes that all these factors motivate their employees to work properly.

4.2 PERMANENT EMPLOYEE:

NIMRA works as a permanent employee in KDSP as coordinator. Talking with her she
told us that there are some factors which motivate her but there are also some factors
which she thinks that doesn’t motivate her to do his job. Her motivation to work here is
that she is happy to see these little kids because these kids are innocent and cute. They
have such a pure and kind heart. The work she is doing, making these children not feel
left out, being accepted by the society and becoming independent is the major factor for
her motivation. Also she is being recognized of her efforts, she puts in. Although her
only problem is salary but she is happy to be a part of such organization which is doing
such a good job. She is very dedicated to her work and tries her best to do his job in
good manner.

4.3 VOLUNTEER:
MR. Ali has recently joined KDSP as a part time volunteer. His motivation to work here
is only to see the cute smile on the faces of these children and wishes to adjust them in
the society as a normal being as many don’t consider them as normal and make them
independent as he is himself a Down syndrome patient, he is well known of the
problems they have to face. He loves to see these cute little children. He blended really
well with those kids and give them a friendly environment. We also noticed that children
got along really well with him. He told us that he want to treat them with love and
affection, not only with physiotherapy.

5. ACTIVITIES PERFORMED:
With children, we asked kids to identify colors and shapes in which many of them did
really well. We also played and sang with them, it was really blissful singing with them.
We didn’t felt that they were abnormal at all. We spent a great time with these children.
Also we conducted verbal survey of 8 people, what they think about working
environment and that how do they want to be appreciated for their outstanding
performance. In which 6 people preferred having no tight control, decentralized working
environment while 2 preferred tight and centralized working environment. 7 preferred to
be rewarded with bonuses and increasing wages while 1 preferred morally appreciated
for his work.

6. OBSERVATIONS:
We observed a very healthy and soulful environment at KDSP and we must say that it is
no doubt the best organization providing support to Down syndrome people. They
engage students in activities like paper craft, vegetable planting, clay art, computer
skills, Zumba, swimming, singing, sports and much more which enhances their abilities.

7. CONCLUSION:
After visiting KDSP we concluded that it is a dedicated facility that aims to redefine the
Early Childhood Intervention & Healthcare programs. Taking a holistic approach to
caring for developing children.
