HE … DID … WHAT?!?

Rich Schefren — the famous “guru to the gurus” — stares at me blankly.

I can tell he’s not impressed.

He takes another sip of his coffee as I stumble through a pitch for my
appearance on his Steal Our Winners program:

“So what I’m saying is … I have this, uh, character-based email
storytelling approach that sells really well … well, it actually even outsold
YOU earlier this year, heh heh … um, no offence or anything … but yeah,
anyway, I think it would make a good episode of Steal Our Winners…”

Rich cocks his head.

“It’s basically just
a 'slice-of-life' thing, yeah?”

“…yeah.”

(But … also no. Ugh. I have totally failed to convey what I do 🤦‍♂️)

“I think I get it,” he says. “I used to do something similar.”

I swallow.

Rich looks pretty unconvinced.

“Here’s the thing,” he continues. “That’s a slow-burn tactic … but for your
feature on Steal Our Winners, we really want those quick-win tactics.
Things that make people want to RUN to their computer to try it for
themselves, you know? Do you have anything like that?”

I groan inwardly.

I actually do, but … do I really have to talk about it yet again?
😒

I guess I have no choice.

I roll my eyes…

Let out a sigh…

And say:

“Okay, let me tell you about something I call
the Parallel Welcome Sequence…”

And I proceed to lay out the concept for my time-travelling, parallel-world-
skipping, giant-monster-fighting, copywriting-course-selling welcome
series.

Rich’s eyes light up.

“Oh, that sounds great,” he says.

Then he frowns:

“Although … it does remind me
of an episode we recorded recently.”

Huh?

“Someone … else taught this idea with you?” I say.

“Yeah,” says Rich, “I interviewed a guy recently whose tactic was really
similar … what was his name…”

I’m puzzled.

The Parallel Welcome Sequence was my invention.

Sure, the click-for-new-email idea existed before me, but the way I put it
all together — in a welcome series, with custom stories to sell my
products on the pages in between — is totally original to me.

Who else could possibly have beaten me to the punch by presenting it to
Rich?

Nobody else is—

Wait.

No.

NO.

I’m starting to get a very, very bad feeling about this.

But … it couldn’t possibly be…

My eyes go wide.

I look back up at Rich in horror…

…as he utters the line that confirms all my suspicions:

“Have you heard of

Matt Bockenstette?”

WHAT.

DID.

YOU.

JUST.

SAY.

My jaw literally drops.

I sit there, momentarily stunned.

Rich notices my reaction.

“You know Matt?” he says.

Do I know Matt?

Ha…

I WENT TO WAR
WITH MATT.

And one of the causes for that…

…was the way he was using my Parallel Welcome Sequence (or, his very
obvious ripoff), while competing in the same industry as me, without so
much as giving me credit.

But to come on Steal Our Winners and TEACH it as his OWN?!?

I just … can’t even…

I take a deep breath and and reply icily:

“I once had to publicly call Matt out for…
copying my emails a little too closely.”

Rich is taken aback for a moment.

“Oh,” he says. “I’m … sorry to hear that.”

“No, go on,” I say. “I don’t want to make this about that. You were
saying?”

“Well,” says Rich, “Matt came on recently and taught a concept similar to
your ‘Parallel Welcome Sequence’ idea.”

“He … did?”

“Yeah, he called it something about the ‘T-shape’? Preparing people for
more content on the interim pages, and sending them the next email
immediately if they clicked or something…”

I grit my teeth.

“I … see,” I say slowly. “Matt got all that from my email list.”

(I feel like spitting the words out rather than saying them.)

“Well,” Rich says, “the good news is that Matt didn’t say anything about
your idea of stories to sell your products. I love that. I think yours is
different enough. I think that’ll make a great idea for Steal Our Winners.”

We agree to do that.

Then, a second after hanging up the call…

“BLOODY BOCKY!!!”

I slam my fist into the desk.

“You have GOT to be kidding me! Does that hack have a SINGLE
ORIGINAL CELL in his body?”

At the noise, Hayley pokes her head in.

“What’s the problem?”

“Matt BOCKENSTETTE is the problem!”

“What? I thought he’d gone quiet?”

“No! And he’s been pitching his ripoff of my Parallel Welcome Sequence
as HIS idea!”

I tell Hayley what just happened on the call. She’s stunned.

“Are you SERIOUS?!?”

“Completely.”

“Do you think he ran your idea through his plagiarism checker again?”
taunts Hayley. “Was it okay because it was only 4% word similarity?”

(I should be proud of my wife’s sick burn there.)

But I just sit there, incredulous at “Bocky’s” utter shamelessness.

And then…

A grin crosses my face.

Actually…

This is a very, very
GOOD thing 😏

I mean … I have literally never made as much money as I did last time I
had to call out Matt’s behaviour, during Black Friday last year.

(And then I proceeded to wipe the floor with him again in another affiliate
promo earlier this year.)

Besides … Matt has never apologised or even showed a shred of
remorse.

The only reason I stoped talking about what he did … was that I thought
he’d had the self-introspection to just quit copywriting. And so, aside from
the occasional dig (like the one I made a few days ago, where I wished
the guy health, happiness and zero success at copywriting) I’ve left him
alone.

But if he’s back in the game — and using MY ideas to do it?

Game on.

I have a clean conscience about telling the side of the story he’d prefer to
hide … and all the receipts to back up who’s been copying who.

Speaking of which:

You may not have been around for Black Friday 2021 when this all went
down.

And so, you might not know that infamous story.

In which case, I present it to you here:

Matt Bockenstette of Copy Legends EXPOSED

(the full story)

That will fill you in up to the present.

Then watch this space to see how things unfold…
