Aryan: Isang pangalan na hindi maaaring kalimutan sa mundo ng sining at kultura sa Pilipinas. Isang
pintor na naging tagapagdala ng kaalaman sa kasaysayan at kulturang Pilipino sa buong mundo.
Ngayon, samahan ninyo ako sa paglalakbay sa buhay ng isang sikat na pintor, na si Juan Luna.

(Narrated) Aryan: Si Juan Luna ay isinilang noong ika-23 ng Oktubre, 1857 sa bayan ng Badoc,
Ilocos Norte. Siya ay anak nina Joaquín Luna at Laureana Novicio.

(Narrated) Aryan: Ang kanyang ama ay isang mangangalakal na taga-Ilocos at ang kanyang ina ay
isang mahusay na musikero at mang-aawit. Lumaki si Luna sa isang pamilya ng mga magsasaka at
dahil dito siya ay namulat sa kahirapan at kawalan ng edukasyon sa kanilang lugar.

painting. In fact, Luna became interested in painting because of the influence of his older brother

(Narrated) Aryan: Nakapag-aral siya sa Academia de Dibujo y Pintura sa Maynila at naging
estudyante ni Lorenzo Guerrero. Ngunit siya’y pinaalis, marahil ay dahil sa kanyang estilo na hindi
umaayon sa kagustuhan ng kanyang maestro. Sa kanyang pag-aaral, mas lalo pa niyang pinatibay
ang kanyang kaalaman sa pagpipinta. Subalit hindi ito naging sapat sa kanyang pag-aaral sa
Pilipinas. Kaya naman, nagpasya si Luna na magpunta sa Europa upang mapalawak pa ang
kanyang kaalaman sa larangan ng sining.

Aryan: Noong 1877, sa rekomendasyon ni Guerrero, pinaaral siya ng kanyang magulang sa Escuela
de Bella Artes sa Madrid kung saan siya nakilala bilang isang magaling na pintor. Dito rin niya
nakilala ang kanyang asawang si Paz Pardo de Tavera na isa ring Pilipino.

(InShot)(Half Narrated)(Narrated) Gwen: When Luna soon started private lessons under Alejo Vera, a
famous Spanish painter, Vera had high regard for the talent and works of Luna and he took him to
Rome to undertake commissions.

(InShot)(Half Narrated)(Narrated) Gwen: While in Rome, Luna widened his knowledge and skill
through his exposure to the works of the Renaissance masters and the Academies.

Aryan: Mula sa pagiging isang mag-aaral ng sining, umusbong ang kanyang talento at napabilang
siya sa kilalang mga pintor sa buong mundo. Isa sa mga pinakatanyag na obra niya ay ang
"Spoliarium," na siya ring nagwagi ng isa sa tatlong gintong medalya sa Exposición Nacional de
Bellas Artes sa Madrid noong 1884.

(InShot)(Half Narrated)(Narrated) Gwen: Without a doubt the most famous artwork by Luna, and
arguably the most widely known artwork is the Spoliarium. The word spolarium is a Latin word which
means the basement of the Roman Colosseum where the bodies of dead gladiators were dragged
and stripped of their armor and weapons.

Aryan: Sa gitna ng larawan ay makikita natin na nakatuon ito sa isang grupo ng mga gladyador na
patay o malapit nang mamatay at sila’y nakahimlay nang nakahalukipkip. Sa paligid nila ay makikita
naatin ang mga sundalong Romano, mga alipin, at mga taong nagmamasid na nag-aabang na ilayo
ang mga katawan.

(Narrated) Aryan: Dahil sa malungkot at madilim na kulay ng larawan, nadarama ng mga nakakakita
ang karahasan at kabrutalan ng nangyaring eksena.

Diputación Provincial de Barcelona and It currently hangs in our National Museum and is the first to
greet visitors upon entry into the museum.

century. Luna had this idea to capture the elegance and sophistication of French society at the time.
This painting features a Parisian woman, elegantly dressed, sitting alone on a sofa inside a cafe.

around another table. And they are actually heroes in Philippine History: Jose Rizal, Ariston Bautista
Lin and Luna himself.

(InShot)(Half Narrated)(Narrated) Gwen: Luna shifted to use light and shadow in "The Parisian Life"
which is especially noteworthy. The way he painted the light filtering through the curtains creates a
sense of depth and texture that draws the viewer into the painting.

Aryan: Sa katunayan, nagwagi ang kanyang likha na "The Parisian Life" ng isang pilak na medalya sa
St. Louis Exposition noong 1904. Dahil dito, lalo pang nabigyan ng pansin ang kanyang husay bilang
isang pintor. Sa kasalukuyan, ang "The Parisian Life" ay bahagi na ng koleksyon ng National
Museum of Fine Arts sa Maynila, dito Pilipinas.

portrayals is the "The Battle of Lepanto" which is one of his best works.

at sitwasyon sa digmaan. Malinaw na makikita natin ang paggalaw ng mga sundalo, ang mga haligi
ng mga barko, ang mga kanyon, at iba pang detalye. Ang pagkakapinta ni Luna ng mga detalyeng ito
ay nagbibigay-buhay sa mga tauhan at nagpapakita ng kanyang husay bilang isang realista.

finished it two years later in 1888. It took him a long time to complete the painting because he was
meticulous in capturing the details of the battle, from the ships to the soldiers.

(InShot)(Half Narrated)(Narrated) Gwen: Luna's masterpiece was not well-received at first. When he
submitted it to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid, it was rejected by the jury because
he was a Filipino. Then after one year, The Battle of Lepanto became a gold medalist during the 1888
Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain.

most important battles in history, fought on October 7, 1571, between the Holy League and the
Ottoman Empire. The Holy League was a coalition of European states, and it was successful in
defeating the Ottoman fleet. This victory was essential in preventing the Islamic Empire's expansion
into Europe.

historical event. It is also a reflection of the Philippines' rich history and culture during the Spanish

fought during the battle and showcases the multiculturalism of the archipelago.

sining ng Pilipinas!
