What is Contemporary Art?
❏ Contemporary arts are the arts of today or produced in the
present period of time.

❏ Contemporary arts includes,and develops from, Postmodern


arts, which is itself a successor to Modern Art.

● Art of today, produced by artist who are living in the 21st century. It provides
opportunity to reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to
ourselves, and the world around us.

Contemporary Dance
Is a popular form of dance which develop during
the middle portion of the Twentieth Century and
has since grown to become one of the
dominating performance genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world.

Harana and Kundiman

The Harana and Kundiman are lyrical songs popular


in the Malaysian islands dating back to the spanish
period.
In the 1920s Harana and Kundiman became more
mainstream musical styles led by performers such
as Atang de la Rama, Jovita Fuentes, Conching
Rosal, Sylvia la Torre and Ruben Tagalog.

Rondalla

The Rondalla is performed on ensembles


comprising mandolin instruments of various
sizes called banduria composed of the Iberian
tradition. Other instruments including guitars, is
also performed. It is original to Spain.

Tinikling

The Tinikling is a Philippine dance which involve


two individual performers hitting bamboo poles,
using them to beat, and slide on the ground, in
coordination with one or more dancers who steps
over or in between poles.

Carinosa

The Carinosa ( meaning loving or affectionate), is


Philippine national dance from the Maria Clara
suite of the Philippine folk dances, where the fan,
and handkerchief plays an instrument role as it
places the couple in romance scenario.

Visual Arts
The arts created primarily for visual perception, as drawings, graphics, painting,
sculpture, and the decorative arts.

The visual arts are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture,
printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture.
Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve
aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types.
Popularly known as BenCab, is an
award winning painter and
printmaker who was tagged as a
master of Philippine contemporary
art.
BenCab was internationally known
and had been exhibiting in Europe,
USA, and Asia.
He received various awards, and
two of these recognitions are the
National Artist Award and the
Gawad CCP para sa Sining.

He is a visual artist from Sulu,who
articulated the Muslim culture and art in
the country.He preserved and promoted
thePhilippine indigenous art throughthe
use of ethnic themes like theukkil,
sarimanok, and naga in hispaintings
and sculptures.He empowered cultural
groups to take part in promoting
equality and in building a better society.

GUILLERMO TOLENTINO
He was the master sculptor who
introduces classical sculpture in the
country.He was known for creating
monuments and bust figures of
Philippine Heroes like Andres Bonifacio
and Jose Rizal and Philippine Presidents
like Manuel L. Quezon and Ramon
Magsaysay. He was also the one who
created the UP Oblation, which became
the representation of the academic
freedom of the university.

Philippine Sculpture, who made
use of wide range of materials
in his works like different types
of hardwood, stones, and
metals. He was also the
sculptor who started the trend
in mixing different materials,
like metal and stone, in making
sculptures.

He is the “Father of Modern Philippine
Painting”. Edades shocked many
Filipinos on his exhibit due to his
nonconventional style of painting. He
deviated from Amorsolo’s use of happy
and bright colors and used dark and
sad hues in his painting instead.
Depicted in his works were the hardship
in the life of the laborers and the lower
class in the society.

expressionistic works
containing powerful
meanings. Angst, anguish, and
anger are the glaring emotions
contained in his cubistic
works as these were created
