FRANCISCA REYES-AQUINO
In 1920 she made a research about the different
folk dances in the Philippines.
Known as the “Folk Dance Pioneer” of the
country.
The Bureau of Education distributed her work
about folk dances as a mean to promote the
cultural heritage to the students.
Due to her valuable effort, she was awarded as
the Republic Award of merit by the former
President Ramon Magsaysay.
RAMON OBUSAN
Promoted and perform the Philippines ethnic
dances with utmost respect and authenticity.
He research about the different ethnic dances in
the Philippines to perfectly perform their dances.

ALICE REYES
She developed the unique Filipino modern
dance idiom.

DAISY AVELLANA
She was the so-called “First Lady of the
Philippine Theater”.
She significantly became part of some theater
productions (e.g. Othello, Macbeth in Balck,
Diego Silang, Walang sugat)
She popularized the Philippine theater and
dramatic arts by founding the BARANGAY
THEATER GUILD, together with his husband
National Artist Lamberto Avellana.
ROLANDO TINIO
An outstanding stage director, poet, thespian
and playwright.
He established and became the administrator of
the Ateneo Expermental Theater.
He handled Teatro Pilipino and revived sarswela
and other traditional Filipino drama.
His major works include:

WILFRIDO MA. GUERERRO
Mentored and trained many performing artist for
35 years.
Introduced and popularized Philippine Theater to

HONORATA “ATANG” DELA RAMA
Hailed as the Queen of Kundiman.
She perform kundiman and filipino songs for indigenous

SALVADOR F. BERNAL
He was an exceptional theater designer who
designs hundreds of theater productions.
He was also a Professor in UP Diliman and Ateneo
de Manila Univ.
He established the PATDAT (Phil. Assoc. of Theater
Designers and Techncians) in 1995.
He internationally introduced the Phil Theater
design through Philippine Center of OISTAT
(Organization Internationale des Scenographers,
Technicians, et architectes du theatre)
SEVERINO MONTANO
Hailed as the “Titan of the Philippine Theater”.
He took the lead in promoting “legitimate
theater” in the country.
He was a top caliber playwright, theater artist
and director.
He became the Dean of Philippine Normal
College where he founded the “Arena Theater”
in 1953.
He also developed graduate programs for
theater arts in the PNC which produced equally
talented artists National artist Lino Brocka and
Rolando Tinio.

FERNANDO AMORSOLO
Known as the Grand old man of the Philippine Art.
The first National Artist of the country.
His trademark was backlighting the technique
which makes the subject of his painting seems to
glow.
His art were also notable for reflecting the artistic
and cultural heritage of the Philippines.
His major works are:

Maiden in the Stream
Hernando Ocampo
He is one of the Thirteen Moderns, who paved way to
the Modernism in the Philippines.
His work was more radical and poetic.
His work shows what kind of society there is during
World war II.
He developed a new style of abstraction through his
use of fierce and striking colors.
His works proved that abstract and non-traditional
style painting can result to nationalistic art.

BENEDICTO CABRERA
Popularly known as “BenCab”.
An award winning painter and printmaker who
was tagged as the master of the Philippine
Contemporary Art.
IN his forty years of being a visual artist, he
received several award, two of these are the
National Artist Award and GAWAD CCP para sa
Sining.
Carlos “botong” Francisco
A muralist from Angono, Rizal.
The significant element of his painting was their lines
and shapes that seem like cutouts and lush tropical
color.
He was a modernist and one of the artist who
introduced modern art to the country.

CESAR LEGASPI
One of the thirteen moderns who also promoted
modern arts in the country.
He was a neo-realist whose important contribution to
modern art was his refinement of cubism.
He indigenized cubism and produced artworks
showing local temperaments.

ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO
A visual artist from Sulu who articulated Muslim
culture and art in the country.
He preserved the and promoted the Philippine
indigenous art through the use of ethnic themes
like the:

Sarimanok
Naga
His other works include the Brass Mural of the
Philippine National Bank.
The mural relief of the film making painted in the
Manila City Hall.
GUILLERMO TOLENTINO
The Master sculptor who introduced classical
sculpture in the country.
He was known for creating monuments and bust
figures of Philippine heroes like Andres Bonifacio
and Dr. Jose Rizal, Philippine presidents like
Manuel Quezon and Ramon Magsaysay.
The one who created the UP oblation which
became the representation of Academic
freedom of the university.
