Part 1. Tips for IELTS Speaking Test

Try to speak at least more than the examiner. If you are asked a question using one
sentence, respond with two or more. And never give short, uncommunicative replies:

You: No, I don't like sports... [Don't stop there!] I'm not a very active person and I've never
liked P.E. in school. But I like playing intellectual games instead. For example, I find chess

3. Give yourself time to think

If you are unsure how to answer the


question, you can give yourself a bit more time to think by using this tip. First of all, you can
say: "That's a tricky question...", "I've never thought about that before..." or "That's an
interesting question...". This way you'll have some extra time to plan your answer.

You can also reformulate the question:

Examiner: What was your favourite book in the childhood?

You: What book did I like as a child? Let me see...

4. Ask for repeating a question/ clarification làm rõ : clarification

If you don’t understand a word on the topic card or your task, you can ask the examiner to
explain. But, don’t just say “I don’t understand.” Instead, use some more advanced phrases.

For example, you could say:

 “By…., do you mean…..?”

 “If I understand correctly, it means that….”

 “So, in other words, I should….”

 “So, is it ok if I talk about…?”

If you ask for clarification using good language, you will really impress your examiner!

5. Use preparation time wisely in IELTS Speaking part 2 wisely:khôn ngoan

In IELTS Speaking Part 2, you have 1 minute of time for preparing your cue card. Use the 1

 quickly think of ideas on the topic about which you are going to speak.

 write down relevant keywords that come in your mind

 write down a list of words related to what you want to say, or draw a mind map.

 number the parts in your notes to organize the flow of ideas for your talk.

E.g. Describe someone that you admire

You should say:

 who this person is

 how long you have known him/ her

 what qualities he/ she has

And say why you admire him/ her.

You can brainstorm and organize your ideas by writing down a note like this:

WHO (my grandmother, almost 80, HOW LONG (my whole life- since I was
major influence) born)

WHAT (kind and wise, compassionate, WHY (unconditional love - great mentor-
charming personality, warm-hearted) give guidance and advice)

You should say:

 what the activity was


 when you did it
 who you did with it
 why it was enjoyable

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Country and city

1. Would you like to live in the countryside in the future?

2. What do people living in the countryside like to do?

3. What are the benefits of living in rural areas?

4. What’s the difference between living in the city and living in the countryside?
