Positive

SDG 7: Affordable and clean Energy

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Negative
SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation
SDG 14: Life below water
SDG15: Life on land

The mining industry can make a significant contribution to achieving the SDGs. Simultaneously,
mining operations present inherent risks that might impede the attainment of the SDGs.

Open-pit mining may enhance direct positive impacts. For instance, focusing on energy
efficiency, mining firms can use their energy demand to extend power to underserved areas
through partnerships that enable shared use of energy infrastructure, attaining SDG 7
(Affordable and Clean Energy). Reinvigorating the mining industry and providing jobs for the
unemployed amidst the pandemic, catalyzing SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Consequently, creating more resilient infrastructure, and promoting inclusive and sustainable
industrialization, bringing SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

However, environmental dangers are present in every step of the open-pit mining process.
These dangers include the release of toxic chemicals into the environment, destruction of land,
and loss of biodiversity, striking SDG 15 (Life on Land). Contamination of water sources from
poor wastewater disposal, harmful impacts on rivers, streams, and aquatic life due to Acid Mine
Drainage targeting SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life below Water).
