SCHOOL CANTEEN:

An overview of food safety knowledge and practices in selected schools in the city of Al Ain, United
Arab Emirates (FOREIGN)

According to Abushelaibi, Jobe, Al Dhanhani, Al Mansoori, and Al Shamsi (2016) in their study entitled
“An overview of food safety knowledge and practices in selected schools in the city of Al Ain, United
Arab Emirates”, to safeguard pupils from food borne illnesses, it's crucial to conduct safe food handling
at school canteens. This study's primary goals were to provide an overview of information about food
safety and sanitary procedures in a few schools in the city of Al Ain, Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab
Emirates. There were three sections to the investigation. The first section focused on the conduct of the
pupils and teachers breakfast snack as well as a brief evaluation of the location with regard to food
safety. The second section examined the knowledge and habits of students and teachers about food
safety, while the third section evaluated the microbiological contamination of hands and surfaces that
came into touch with food comprising learners, educators, and food handlers. Findings showed that just
four out of eight schools (50%) maintain foodstuffs at 5 °C or lower. In terms of refrigerator cleanliness,
six out of the eight schools (75%) do not sufficiently clean their refrigerators. When it came to personal
hygiene, it was found that 37.5% of respondents don't adequately wash their hands after using the
restroom. This conduct could put kids at risk for germs that cause food poisoning, like salmonella and
staphylococcus, can cause severe nausea and vomiting. The second section's findings revealed that
60.3% of respondents eat lunch at school playground. Use of a playground for both physical activity and
eating could expose the vicinity to additional dust, which could be a cause of contamination. About the
microbial examination of the hands and surfaces of students and food handlers indicated that, although
the surfaces and hands of students and food handlers were evaluated, Escherichia coli and
Staphylococcus were present, and overall microbiological conditions were normal. Concerning, teachers
and even food handlers had aureus on their hands.

Scrutinize of healthy school canteen policy in Iran’s primary schools: a mixed method study
(FOREIGN)

According to Babashah, Omidvar, Joulaei, Zargaraan, Zayer, Veisi, Doustmohammadian, and Kelishadi
(2021) in their paper entitled “Scrutinize of healthy school canteen policy in Iran’s primary schools: a
mixed method study”, schools offer an opportunity to make plans to create environments where
students can eat well. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the Healthy School Canteen
(HSC) policy and pinpoint issues with its initiatives to enhance the Iranian school food environment.
According to the study the school cafeteria is a crucial part of education, children's eating habits and the
food environment, eating behaviours, which might lead to a high intake of foods that are high in energy
but low in nutrients (EDNP). Enhancing the nutritional value of the food served in schools has been
found to help reduce childhood obesity and foster healthy settings for kids are required. Regulations
governing nutrition food accessibility in schools has been advised to enhance child nutrition, by the
WHO. These regulations present a chance to guarantee that the meals produced accessible to children
in schools, abide with dietary requirements regulations and restrictions on sales of particular foods and
what foods and beverages can be sold in schools is decided by nutrition standards or beverage items
(such as soft drinks).

Assessment of Sanitary Conditions and Food Handlers’ Practices of Public and Private High School
Canteens in Eastern Visayas, Philippines (LOCAL)

The research “Assessment of Sanitary Conditions and Food Handlers’ Practices of Public and Private High
School Canteens in Eastern Visayas, Philippines” by Pascual & Abenis (2016) analyse the hygienic
conditions and food handlers' procedures at 22 high school canteens from five important cities in the
Philippine province of Eastern Visayas. In accordance with a food service checklist developed in
accordance with the Philippine Code of Sanitation (1976) for food businesses, fifteen public and seven
private schools in Tacloban, Ormoc, Catbalogan, Baybay, and Maasin City that used the "cook-serve"
approach were chosen and evaluated. Results revealed that nine (60%) of the 15 public schools were
categorized as having poor sanitary conditions, whereas six (40%) of these schools have medium
sanitary conditions. One (14%), four (57%) and two (29%) private schools, respectively, have acceptable,
medium, and poor hygienic conditions. Based on the higher percentage of public schools classed as
having poor sanitary conditions, results have also suggested that public schools may generally have
worse hygienic circumstances than private schools. Both public (6.25) and private (6.25) schools had low
scores on the criterion for the hygiene of food handlers, indicating bad hygiene habits. From this study,
it can be inferred that school administrators, including local government entities, should give careful
thought to issues related to the acquisition of permits and certifications, improvement of facility design,
and strict execution of cleanliness standards. Training food handlers in good manufacturing procedures
(GMPs) is one example of an intervention that should be carried out. Quantification of the
microbiological content of food and water is also necessary.

and commodity, as well as the quantity and quality of food, were used as evaluated by the canteen
manager, the student, the teacher, and the parent respondents. The researcher gives the following
suggestions based on significant findings and conclusions reached: School administrators should create a
practical and workable long-term master plan for cafeteria operations and employee duties; conduct
routine inspections or eye visits at school cafeterias especially on the kitchen area to ensure cleanliness
and It is strongly recommended that food handlers maintain hygiene; that the Officials from the
institution should be prepared to amuse and provide prompt response to accusations of improper food
handling and various issues regarding the operation of the canteen; to provide discounts and cheaper
combination meals; that the kitchen staff should seek out natural seasoning alternatives rather than
using too much glutamate monosodium, which has a negative impact on the environment's health and
safety conditions; that the school administration and canteen staff should provide crews and personnel
with on-going training, especially for those freshly engaged to ensure the safety of food preparation and
handling.

PERCEPTIONS

According to the study of It is further concluded that students’ perceptions of teacher effectiveness can
be linked with student achievement. It is implied that students’ perceptions can be used as a
supplement data source besides other data sources such as self-assessment and head teachers’ ratings.
In addition, describing relationship between students’ perceptions of teaching effectiveness and
students’ achievement will offer teachers recommendations that will be supportive to revising their
teaching strategies (Akram, 2019). (FOREIGN)
