Introduction
Racism is a continuous act in our society and has
tremendously impacted so many individuals in
various forms. In this presentation we will be
sharing with you: what is racism, the types of
racism,and the effects of racism. This has been an
age-old issue within our society and we will be
looking a little deeper on what it entails and how
discrimination may leave lasting effects on
individuals.
What is Racism?
Racism is prejudice, discrimination or hatred directed at
someone because of the colour of their skin colour,
ethnicity, or national origin. Racism can be revealed
through people’s actions and attitudes towards another
person.
Racism is also the belief or act, where people are divided
into “races” based on their physical traits, personality,
intellect, morality, and other cultural and behavioural
features.

This term is also applied to political, economic or


legal institutions and systems that engage in or
perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race or
other racial inequalities .
What is meant by the term “Race”?

Race is how people are grouped, based on


shared skin colour and other physical feature.
Race is not based on genetics or science.
Everyone has a racial identity.
Types of Racism

● Individual or Internalized Racism: This racism exists


within individuals. It is when one has negative ideas
about his/her own culture, even unknowingly.
● Cultural Racism: This is hatred towards one’s culture or
the thought that one culture is more superior than
another.
● Aversive Racism: Aversive racism rises from unconscious
personal beliefs taught during childhood.
● Racial Discrimination: Prejudice or unfairness against
someone, based on their race.

● Racial Segregation: The separation of


humans into socially-constructed racial
groups in daily life. It may apply to activities
such as eating in a restaurant, drinking from a
water fountain, using a bathroom, attending
a school, going to movies, or in the rental or
purchase of a home.

Effects of Racism
Racism can cause:
● Stress
● Depression
● Suicidal thoughts
● Anxiety
● Low self-esteem
● Loss of hope
● Decreased trust
● Fear and worry
Conclusion
To conclude, racism is the act of
discriminating someone based
on their ethnicity or skin colour.
In addition racism will have a
negative impact on people and
the society at large. Racism
should be put to an end, by
people accepting each other for
who they are.
