One size, to fit average woman’s foot, 7¼” foot & leg
circumference, adjustable length
MATERIALS
Manos del Uruguay ALEGRIA (75% Superwash Merino, 25%
Polyamide), 405m/445 yds per 100g/3.5 oz skein
1 skein in A9033 Aloha
2.5mm set of 4 or 5 DPNs or preferred sock knitting needle
(e.g. shor t circular, or longer circular for magic loop method)
Stitch marker
Tapestr y needle
GAUGE
34 sts and 42 rnds in pattern = 10cm/4” after blocking
PATTERN NOTES
These socks are worked from the cuff down in the round.
The stitch pattern goes all the way around the leg, then after
the heel the pattern is worked only on the instep (top of the
foot) with the sole stitches worked in stocking stitch. The heel
and toe are both shaped with shor t rows using the wrap and
turn method. The toe stitches are then grafted together using
the Kitchener stitch.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Short Row Heel/Toe, including w&t
The shor t row heel is worked over 31 sts, working a wrap-
and-turn (w&t) to work back and for th in shor t rows over
fewer and fewer sts until the heel turn, then working back
along these sts again in shor t rows while picking up the
wraps. The shor t row toe is worked in the same way.
The wrap and turn (w&t) method helps prevent holes when
you are working shor t rows, and is slightly different whether
you are working a knit (RS) or a purl (WS) row. The wrap
looks like a collar on the st and will need to be picked up
when you next work that st.
To wrap a stitch:
On RS rows, knit to where you need to turn, bring the yarn
to the front of the work, sl the next st on the LH ndl to the
RH ndl, bring the yarn to the back of the work, sl the st to
the LH ndl, then turn your work so the WS of the work faces
you ready to work the next row.

On WS rows, purl to where you need to turn, sl the next st
on the LH ndl to the RH ndl, bring the yarn to the back of
the work, sl the st to the LH ndl, bring the yarn to the front
of the work, then turn your work so the RS of the work faces
you ready to work the next row.
To pick up a single wrap:
On RS rows, knit to the wrapped st as instructed, inser t the
RH ndl up from the bottom of the wrap then through the st
on the LH ndl, knitting these together.
On WS rows, purl to the wrapped st as instructed, inser t the
RH ndl from the back (RS) of the work up from the bottom
of the wrap and place it on the LH ndl, then work a p2tog to
purl the wrap and the original st together.
To pick up a double wrap:
On RS rows, knit to the wrapped st as instructed, inser t the
RH ndl up from the bottom of both wraps then through the
st on the LH ndl, knitting these together.
On WS rows, purl to the wrapped st as instructed, inser t the
RH ndl from the back (RS) of the work up from the bottom
of both wraps and place them on the LH ndl, then work a
p3tog to purl the wraps and the original st together.
Kitchener stitch
The Kitchener stitch is used to graft sts together seamlessly.
Hold the remaining sts parallel with the same number of sts
on the front ndl and back ndl. Thread the tapestr y needle with
the long tail. Inser t the tapestr y needle k-wise through the
first st on the front ndl, leaving the st on the ndl, then inser t
the tapestr y needle p-wise through the first st on the back
ndl, leaving the st on the ndl. Now repeat as follows: *Inser t
tapestr y needle k-wise through the first st on front ndl and sl
st off the ndl, inser t tapestr y needle p-wise through the next
st on the front ndl and leave it on the ndl, inser t tapestr y
needle p-wise through the first st on the back ndl and sl st off
the ndl, inser t tapestr y needle k-wise through the next st on
the back ndl and leave it on the ndl; rep from * until 1 st rem
on each ndl, inser t tapestr y needle k-wise through st on front
ndl and sl st off ndl, inser t tapestr y needle p-wise through st
on back ndl and sl st off ndl. Weave in end.

Heel Turn Short Row Toe

Row 1 (RS): K to first wrapped st, work wrap tog with the
next st (see Special Instructions), w&t (this stitch now has 2
wraps).
Row 2 (WS): P to first wrapped st, work wrap tog with the
next st, w&t (this stitch now has 2 wraps).
Row 3: K to first double-wrapped st, work both wraps tog
with the next st, w&t.
Row 4: P to first double-wrapped st, work both wraps tog
with the next st, w&t.
Rep Rows 3-4 until there is only 1 single-wrapped st at each
side of the heel.
Next Row (RS): K to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Next Row (WS): P to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Foot
Now work in the rnd on all sts, working the heel/sole sts in
Stocking Stitch and continuing the Maui Moss Stitch pattern
on the instep (top of foot) sts as follows. When working Rnds
1-2, make sure to work any wraps tog with their st as you
come to them.
Rnd 1: K to end of heel/sole sts, sl1 p-wise wyib, *k1, p1, k1,
sl1 p-wise wyib; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: K31, k1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Next Rnd: K31, work in Maui Moss Stitch pattern to end
of rnd.
Rep this rnd until Foot measures 4.5cm/1¾” shor ter than
required length, ending after a Rnd 2 of pattern.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Work back and for th on first 31 sts (sole sts) only.
Row 1 (RS): K30, w&t.
Row 2 (WS): P29, w&t.
Row 3: K to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Row 4: P to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Rep Rows 3-4 until there are 8 wrapped sts at each side of
the toe, with 15 sts not wrapped at the centre of the toe.
Toe Turn
Row 1 (RS): K to first wrapped st, work wrap tog with the
next st, w&t (this stitch now has 2 wraps).
Row 2 (WS): P to first wrapped st, work wrap tog with the
next st, w&t (this stitch now has 2 wraps).
Row 3: K to first double-wrapped st, work both wraps tog
with the next st, w&t.
Row 4: P to first double-wrapped st, work both wraps tog
with the next st, w&t.
Rep Rows 3-4 until there is only 1 single-wrapped st at each
side of the toe.
Next Row (RS): K to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Next Row (WS): P to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t.
Next Row: K to end, working wrap tog with st as you come
to it, turn.
Next Row: P to end, working wrap tog with st as you come to
it, turn.
FINISHING
Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Place first 32 sts on one ndl and
32 instep sts on a second ndl, then Kitchener stitch these sts
together (see Special Techniques).

Weave in ends. Wash and block to required measurements.
