TIMELIME OF THE

HISTORY OF
COOPERATIVES

Date Events

1498
The Shore Porters Society,
claims to be one of world first
cooperatives being established in
Aberdeen Scotland (although it has
since demutualized to become a
private partnership).

1769
The first documented consumer
cooperatives was founded, in a barely
furnished cottage in Fenwick, East
Ayrshire, when local weavers manhandled
a sack of oatmeal into John Waker’s
whitewashed front room and began selling
the contents at a discount, forming the
Fenwick weaver’s society.

Lennoxtown Friendly Victuallling
Society was founded. The focus of
the Lennoxtown group was operation
of the busy Lennox Mill, where
tenants of the Woodhead state
brought their corn to be ground.

Several hundred cooperatives


had been formed. Some where
initially successful, but most had
failed by 1840.

Lockhurst Lane industrial Co-


operatives Society was formed (and now
Heart of England Co-operative Society),
and Galashiels and Hawick Co-operatives
Societies (1839 or earlier, merged with
the co-operative Group) still trade today.

Rochdale Society of Equitable
Pioneers established the “Rochdale
Principles” on which they ran their
cooperative, that the basis for
development and growth of the
modern cooperative movement was
established.

• An Englishman: was called the “Father


of Cooperation“.
• Reduce work hours 14 to 10.
• Built houses for workers and
established free scholars for children.

• An Englishman from Brighton,


England.
• Organized the Brighton Society in
1828.
• Adopted Owen ideas and put them
into practice.

ROCHDALE SOCIETY OF EQUITABLE PIONEERS

• Was the first successful consumers cooperative.


• Composed of 28 Rochdale weavers, look into the
deplorable working conditions in the mechanized
weaving factory.
• In 1844 open a small shop to sell groceries to
members.

• A small town mayor and protestant


minister who sent up his first rural
credit association in 1864 to address
the problem of unemployment.

THE HISTORY OF COOPERATIVE
MOVEMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES
(Which can be Divided into Three Stages)

• Cooperatives are compatible to the Filipino culture


whose concepts and practices of “Bayanihan”
(Cooperation) preceded the coming of the Spaniards.
YEAR STAGES

The first Stage,


From 1895 to 1941, is characterized
by the aborted germination of
Coops by some Revolutionary
Illustrados (or the pre-formation
period).

The Second Stage,


This Stage can be five Phases;

• The first phase, is the period of Japanese


occupation which featured a rapid increase in
cooperatives as a result of food shortages.
• The Second phase is the period of rehabilitation
period after the 2nd World War.

• The third phase is the resurgence of the


state-initiated Coops while,
• The fourth phase is the introduction and
rise of the non-agricultural Coops.
• The fifth and final phase is the Martial law
period and the politizatiom of the coop
movement.

The Third Stage,


• This Stage shows the emergence of the coop
movement as a potent political force as it
allies with the NGO and trade union
movements in pursuing the goals of people
empowerment and the strengthening the
country’s Civil society sector.

1986-Present
YEAR STAGES

• During the 1998 party list elections, the


cooperatives movement was able to elect 3
sectoral representatives which led all other
sectors, groups and non-dominant political
parties in representing the marginalized and
underpresented masses of the Filipino
people.
